10The Daily Tar HeelFriday, April 15, 1988 Sports Life at the top of Tar Heel men's tennis not all roses for Johnson By BRENDAN MATHEWS Staff Writer Sometimes things just don't work out the way you expect them to, and that is certainly the case for Don Johnson, the top seed on the UNC men's tennis team. Although only a sophomore, injuries to key players have forced him into the position where he regularly faces opponents with twice his collegiate experience. Johnson admits that the transition has been challenging. "Moving from No. 5 (last season) to No. 1 has been a big change," he said. "The compe tition is a lot tougher. I feel like 1 can play with (the other top seeds), but I don't feel as strong. 1 get overpowered partly because they have more experience." The move to the top spot has been a mixed blessing. Johnson knows that in the long run the tougher compe tition will improve his game, but for now it's often a source of frustration. "Not winning causes you to lose a lot of confidence," he said. "It's hard to lose three in a row and then get up to play a guy who's just as good as the three before." The season has been tougher than expected, but Johnson's talent has kept him from falling far behind. He boasts a record of 18-12 overall, 2 4 in the ACC, and in competition against players with equal experience, he has shown that with time he will be one of the dominant players in the conference. Although only in his second year, Johnson has already compiled an impressive list of on-court accomp lishments. Last season, the Pitts burgh, Pa., native posted a 25-11 record, including a streak that saw him win 12 of his last 13 singles matches. He also piled up a 22-8 mark in doubles play and garnered All ACC honors, the first freshman in UNC history to do so. Last summer, Johnson toured the National Amateur Circuit, playing in tournaments close to home and finishing fourth nationally. He plans to hit the circuit again this summer, along with four or five other UNC players. 'O WW- DTHChristie Blom Sophomore Don Johnson has been thrust into the No. 1 slot for UNC Johnson started off his sophomore combined with freshman Thomas year on the right foot, reaching the Tanner to reach the finals of flight final rounds in the No. I singles flight A doubles. in both the Big 4 Tournament and the Skakle Championships. Playing with fellow co-captain Jimmy Weilbaecher, he made it to the doubles finals at the Big 4. At the South Carolina Invitational he LACROSSE vs. Virginia With all of this momentum behind him, Johnson looked forward to another All-ACC performance play ing at second or third seed. But shoulder trouble redshirted junior Dave Pollack, last year's No. 2, and a broken ankle sidelined Weil baecher, leaving Johnson at the top of a very young team. Johnson doesn't give the typical line about sacrificing personal goals for the good of the team when asked about playing in the more difficult top spot. "Sometimes 1 think I'd like to be two or three," he said. "If I did, I'd be having a pretty good season. But this is good experience, and it 11 be good for me down the road, having played these tougher people if I make it through." Making it through has meant some tough losses and a demanding sche dule of matches which has begun to take its toll, as seen by Johnson's recent back injury. Thursday, he ended up watching the team's loss to Wake Forest from the stands, ice packs on his back. "We've had a real problem with our luck this year," he said. "We just don't have any." That may be true for this season, but Johnson is confident that he will be able to use the lessons learned this spring to become a threat at No. 1.
