UNC's Thomas Tanner reaches for a backhand in Sunday's men's tennis victory over William & Mary
Tennis wraps up regular season
By MIKE BERARDINO
Shorts Edrtor
Allen Morris, the eighth-year
coach of UNC's men's tennis team,
was smiling late Sunday afternoon.
It wasn't that Morris was partic
ularly proud of the Tar Heels' just
completed 5-4 victory over William
& Mary. Nor was the upcoming ACC
Tournament behind Morris' wry grin.
Like his team, Morris was just
happy "next year" was that much
closer.
The overly young, injury-depleted
Tar Heels closed out a frustrating
regular season Sunday at the UNC
Tennis Center, running out to a 4
2 lead after the singles matches and
getting the one doubles victory they
needed from the team of David
Kessler and Andre Janasik.
North Carolina will take a 13-12

record into this weekend's ACC
Tournament in Winston-Salem,
which will run Thursday through
Saturday.
"I'm just looking forward to next
year now," Morris said. "I just hope
we don't finish last at the ACCs."
The Tar Heels were again without
the services of sophomore Don
Johnson, their No. 1 player. John
son, who pulled a back muscle early
last week, had to default his singles
match in Friday's loss to Duke, but
is expected to be back in the lineup
this weekend.
Freshman Thomas Tanner, whose
16-5 singles record Morris called a
"pleasant surprise," stepped in for
Johnson at No. 1 Sunday and wiped
out Will Harvie 6-0, 6-0. At the
second slot, UNC sophomore James
Krege fell 3-6, 3-6 to Scott Mackesy,

while at No. 3 UNC's John Bristow
lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 to Kelly Hunter.
But the Tar Heels won the remain
ing three singles matches to go up
4- 2 entering doubles play. Janasik, a
freshman from Hilton Head, S.C.,
downed Gregg Frigerio at No. 4, 6
3, 6-4. Kessler, a junior who ranks
as the elder statesman of the UNC
team, had little trouble with the
Indians' fifth-seeded player, Mike
Scherer, in rolling to a 6-4, 6-3 win.
And at No. 6 Derek Weilbaecher
romped past Mark Frietag 6-3, 6-0.
"Considering the youth of the
team, the lack of experience, 1 think
we accomplished a lot this year,"
Morris said. "The last part of the
season has been disappointing. We
lost three straight close matches
5- 4 to West Virginia, 5-4 to Maryland
and 54 to Virginia. That was pretty
discouraging for the team."
In Thursdays first round, the Tar
Heels will meet Georgia Tech, a team
they lost to 8-1 back on March 26
in Chapel Hill.
