It wasn't that Morris was partic ularly proud of the Tar Heels' just completed 5-4 victory over William & Mary. Nor was the upcoming ACC Tournament behind Morris' wry grin. Like his team, Morris was just happy "next year" was that much closer. The overly young, injury-depleted Tar Heels closed out a frustrating regular season Sunday at the UNC Tennis Center, running out to a 4 2 lead after the singles matches and getting the one doubles victory they needed from the team of David Kessler and Andre Janasik. "I just hope we don't finish last at the ACCs." The Tar Heels were again without the services of sophomore Don Johnson, their No. 1 player. John son, who pulled a back muscle early last week, had to default his singles match in Friday's loss to Duke, but is expected to be back in the lineup this weekend. Freshman Thomas Tanner, whose 16-5 singles record Morris called a "pleasant surprise," stepped in for Johnson at No. 1 Sunday and wiped out Will Harvie 6-0, 6-0. Kessler, a junior who ranks as the elder statesman of the UNC team, had little trouble with the Indians' fifth-seeded player, Mike Scherer, in rolling to a 6-4, 6-3 win. And at No. 6 Derek Weilbaecher romped past Mark Frietag 6-3, 6-0. "Considering the youth of the team, the lack of experience, 1 think we accomplished a lot this year," Morris said. "The last part of the season has been disappointing. We lost three straight close matches 5- 4 to West Virginia, 5-4 to Maryland and 54 to Virginia. That was pretty discouraging for the team."
