"Nuclear weapons are good if they are retaliatory in nature," Burgess said. The United States has the upper hand now, because the Soviets have spent 15 times as much as the United States on space defense systems research but have no results, said Steven Dolley, a graduate in speech communications from Williston, Vt. But if the United States deploys an SDI system, it would be seen as a threat to the Soviets and perpetuate a greater arms race, Dolley said. SETA was disadvantaged, Work man said, because of the vague specifications of "politically partisan." "The congress does groups a disservice by not having more objec tive standards," she said. Although the group's political nature was the official reason SETA was denied funds, another reason was that organizations supported by student fees should benefit students, Ferris said. "SETA is standing up for animal rights, but there are plenty of student concerns that are more important," he said. McNeill said the congress didn't give his argument about the CGLA's political partisanship enough atten tion because it sympathizes with the CGLA. I Sports Baseball drops 2 to No. 1 OSU From staff reports Playing the top team in the land is usually a hard thing to do, as the UNC baseball team found out Mon day and Tuesday. The Tar Heels were in Stillwater, Okla., facing the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who boast of an incredible 37-2 record. Monday, the Cowboys rolled up a 12-0 lead en route to a 19-6 spanking of UNC. Sophomore Ail-American third baseman Robin Ventura drilled two home runs in the contest as Okla homa State scored in every inning, amassing six homers and 22 hits. Tar Heel sophomore Michael Hoog took the loss to fall to 7-4 on the year. The Cowboys ripped him for 10 runs in 5 13 innings. Ventura set an NCAA record last year as a freshman by hitting in 58 straight games. Interestingly, he started that streak after going 0-for-4 against UNC in a 9-8 Cowboy win. He is currently hitting .387, which is only fourth best on the OSU team. Monday, the 1987 Player of the Year ripped a solo dinger in the first Stats prove that Chamberlain was basketball's greatest When it came time to do my English 2 argument research paper, I immediately tried to think of something in sports worth arguing about. Would it be the drug testing of athletes, a very popular subject now? Should I write on the proposed payment of college athletes? So many possibilities. Then it hit me. For as long as I can remember, and for many years before then, the debate over the greatest basketball player ever ran wildly. Invariably, talk centered around Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. I, having always been appalled whenever I heard someone state that Russell was better than Chamberlain, had my topic. But when I did my paper, the lack of information on the subject astounded me. The back issues of my sports bible (Sports Illustrated) did not have anything on it, and the UNC library system had only a couple of books about the subject I turned in my paper last Wednes day, using the few resources I had. I will not go into what I made, but let's just say it was not an A. However, this week, in my depressed state over my paper, I was re-reading an SI when a letter to the editor hit me like a ton of Goodyear racing tires (sorry about the racing analogy). Harvey Pollack, director of statis tical information for the Philadelphia 76ers, wrote a letter responding to an article in the Feb.22 issue. In the article, which was about the lack of true centers in the NBA, a caption appeared that read, "(Bill) Russell often got the better of Wilt (Cham berlain), and the record book cer tainly is proof positive." I could not believe it! Here was a perfect piece of information that I could have used for my English paper. Then another thought occurred to me. Why not use the letter as a basis for an opinion article in the DTH? Reid picks From staff reports J.R. Reid won four awards and Jeff Lebo and Ranzino Smith picked up three apiece at North Carolina's annual basketball banquet Monday night. In voting by his teammates, Reid was named most valuable player for the past season. He also won honors as the team's top rebounder, drawing the most charges and overall statis tical leader. Lebo took the Foy Roberson Award as the team's most inspira tional player. He also won awards for leading the team in assists and took the athletic director's scholar-athlete award. Wednesday 4 p.m. CAA (Carolina Athletic Associa tion) will meet in 226 Student Union. All The Daily inning and added another in the fifth, followed by homers by Monte Fariss and Ray Ortiz. The Tar Heels got on the board in the seventh, when Jesse Levis homered over the scoreboard in right field. UNC almost knocked off the Cowboys Tuesday, but fell 8-6 instead. Designated hitter Adam Smith's eighth-inning two-run homer, his second two-run blast of the game, was the difference. The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, due to Tom Nevin's solo homer to right to start off the game and Chris Lauria's RBI single in the first inning. Bobby Honneycutt drilled an RBI single in the second for the third run. The Cowboys tied things up in the fourth when Ortiz' single plated Ventura, who had doubled, and Smith roped his first homer of the game over the rightfield fence. Nevin scored in the fifth for the Tar Heels after OSU starting pitcher Tim Pugh made an error, but Fariss laced a two-run single in the Cow Keith Parsons Opinion Bingo. As Pollack writes in his letter, the caption was not only misleading, but totally erroneous. Pollack gives the following facts. In the 142 times Russell and Chamberlain faced each other, Chamberlain scored 4,077 points and grabbed 4,072 rebounds. For those of you who are not math majors, that works out to 28.7 points and 28.7 rebounds a game. On the other hand, Russell managed only about half as many points (2,060) and pulled down 3,373 boards. This is 14.5 points a game and 23.7 rebounds a contest. It is easy to see who got the better of whom. Here is some more evidence to support my claim that Chamberlain was better than Russell, and therefore the greatest player ever. And I do not want anyone to even mention Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. On Nov. 24, 1960, against Russell, Chamberlain cleaned the glass for 55 bounds, an NBA record. Also, even though Russell is widely recognized as the greatest defensive player ever, Wilt once poured in 62 points against him. The best Russell could do against Chamberlain was 37. I was reading a book by Red Auerbach recently where Auerbach himself said Russell was "the greatest rebounder to ever live." Auerbach went on to say, "And don't give me any of that crap about Chamberlain's numbers." Okay, Red, sure. Just because Chamberlain outrebounded your man Russell in 95 of the 142 games they played against each other does not mean he outrebounded him. Say what? So that means just because Cham berlain is the second-leading scorer up 4 hoops awards Smith was named the team's permanent captain, in addition to awards for most outstanding senior and leading the team in free-throw shooting. Junior Steve Bucknall was named the team's best defensive player and top screener, Rick Fox won as outstanding freshman and for leading the team in field-goal percentage, and Scott Williams was named leading shot blocker. Department of Radio, Tel Tar Heel Wednesday, April 20, 19887 boys' half of the inning to give OSU its first lead of the game. A Chris DeFranco solo shot to right tied things up at 6-6 in the seventh, and after Ventura brought in yet another run with a sacrifice fly that Nevin climbed the leftfield fence to haul in, Levis tied it again in the eighth with a solo shot to left-center, setting up Smith's heroics. In the Tar Heels' last gasp, Nevin doubled to lead off the inning, but Carl Myers came in to pitch to DeFranco, and he grounded out. David Mlick then got Dave Arendas to fly out, and Ron Gerstein got Levis to ground out to short to end the game. Freshman Kreg Gresham (1-3) picked up the loss for the Tar Heels, despite giving up only one hit, Smith's two-run dinger, in four innings of work. Jim Dougherty started and went the first five frames, giving up just six hits. Pugh was the winner for the Cowboys (9-0), and Gerstein saved his first game of the year. With the losses, the Tar Heels fell to 24-18 on the year. in NBA history, that does not mean he is the second-leading scorer in NBA history. Right? Come on Red, get a clue. In defense of Sports Illustrated, the magazine did list the fact that Russell and the Boston Celtics won nine NBA championships from 1959 (Chamber lain's rookie year) to 1969 (Russell's last as a player). Following that theory, Ernie Banks, the great Chicago Cub short stop of yesteryear, was not as good a player as, say, Bucky Dent, the Yankee player at short during the New York dynasty. After all, Banks never won a championship. At least Chamberlain won one during the Russell Celtic era and added one more in the early 1970s while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. Did you notice something in my last sentence? Instead of simply writing "the Russell era," I added "Celtic." This is because the twogo hand in hand. Even Auerbach, in jbis book, admits Russell would probably not have been such a great player if he played for a team other than Boston. While at Boston, Russell played with such legendary players as Bob Cousy, Bill Sharman, John Havlicek, K.C. Jones and Sam Jones. The only years Chamberlain had this kind of support, he won the championship, too. In those winning years, Cham berlain played alongside players like Chet Walker, Hal Greer, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. As Walter Bingham points out in his NBA playoffs article in this week's SI, of Russell's seven victories over Chamberlain in the NBA playoffs, four series went to the seventh and deciding game. The margin of victory in those four games was nine points. I have just one last thought on the subject. Chamberlain was a great player on his own, while Russell needed the Celtic name behind him to reach the same level. i Olympic Training Center.
