Olympics draw from top of heap From Associated Press reports COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Navy's David Robinson and Kansas' Danny Manning were sup posed to make the cut after a week of tryouts for the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team, and they did. Stan ford's Todd Lichti and Central Michigan's Dan Majerle were barely know n, and they made it, too. That's the range of the 86 players, out of the original 92, named by Georgetown coach John Thompson on Tuesday to compete in a compli cated selection process for the 12 member team to defend the U.S. gold medal in the Summer Games at Seoul, South Korea, in September. In all, as many as 30 players could still be in the running for the actual Olympic team: sixteen players from the initial trials, led by Robinson and Manning and including relative unknowns Lichti, Majerle, Cal-Santa Barbara's Brian Shaw and Southern Mississip pi's Randolph Keys, invited to the final camp at Georgetown University on July 10; ten other players, including high school prodigy Alonzo Mourning of Chesapeake, Va., to join Robinson on a USA Select Team which will tour Europe and eventually send four to eight more competitors to the Georgetown camp; up to four other players who will compete for the final roster spot on the USA Select Team. In addition to Robinson, the 1986 87 Player of the Year at Navy and the NB A's No. 1 draft choice last year, and Manning, certain to be the NBA's No. 1 draft choice this year after leading Kansas to the national championship, the familiar names who will assemble at Georgetown include: All-Americans Sean Elliot of Arizona and Hersey Hawkins of Bradley, Pan Am Games starter Willie Anderson of Georgia, Mitch Richmond of Kansas State, J.R. Reid of UNC, Stacey King of Oklahoma, Jeff Grayer of Iowa State, Danny Ferry of Duke and both players named Charles Smith the forward from Pittsburgh and the guard from Georgetown.
