UNC makes preliminary plans for bicentennial celebration From staff reports , 1 Bicentennial celebration plans are underway, but no specifics have been set yet, according to William Massey, director of the Bicentennial Observance Planning Office. The University, which was chartered in December 1789, opened its doors in January 1795, making it the first state university -in the country. Official bicenten nial celebrations begin in October 1993 and will continue through February 1995.' Massey said the events which will include large public occasions, academically oriented activities on campus, events that feature stu dent groups and outreach pro-' grams that bring a little of the University to other parts of the state will involve students, faculty and staff members, alumni and Chapel Hill residents. "We see the bicentennial as an appropriate time to look back and to set some goals for the future,"" Massey said. v " v The bicentennial will give the. University a chance to showcase its achievements on a national stage. "I think we have the oppor-. tunity to make our bicentennial the most important anniversary in : the 20th century," Massey said. "We are going into the third century in a big way." ? - - Kenan facelift behind deadline The renovation of Kenan Sta dium is slightly behind schedule but should be completed in time for the Tar Heels to host Okla homa in their first home game Sept. 10, said Claude Swecker, associate vice-chancellor for facil ities management. University Briefs , The $7 million renovation pro ject will increase the seating capacity by 2,500, from the current 49,500 to 52,000. Kenan is also getting a new press box, a new chancellor's box and stadium lights so UNC can host night games. The Oklahoma game will give officials a chance to show off the renovations on national television when ESPN carries the game live at 5 p.m. It will also be one of the only opportunities to use the new lights this year since there are no other night games scheduled at Kenan. -' V'" ,' "" Area directors relocated University housing has two new area directors, and last year's directors have moved to different areas, according to the housing , department. j James Weaver and Leslie Foster . are the two newest ADs, and they T will be in Henderson Residence College (HRC) and the . In the other areas, Melissa Finley will remain in Hinton James Residence Hall, Gary John- , son will remain in Ehringhaus Residence Hall and Sharon McMillen-Cannon will stay in STOW Ann Stevens will move from HRC to Morrison Residence Hall, Iris Hunt will move from Scott Residence College to Craige Residence Hall, Anne Presnell will , move from Cobb-Joyner to Scott Residence College and Roger .
