The Daily Tar HeelFriday, September 2, 198811A Repertory company prepares for season of diverse drama By KELLY RHODES Arts Editor PlayMakers Repertory Company is gearing up for a theatrical year full of Shaw, Shakespeare, local talent, guest artists and airlines. American Airlines is helping out by co-producing the first production of the PRC's 13th season, "The Marriage of Figaro," in celebration of their daily non-stop service to Paris from Raleigh. The French play will begin September 21. "Figaro" is a comedy of romance and intrigue, set in the 18th century, that champions one's character rather than birth. After being banned by Louis XIV, the popular play was one of the first things to incite the masses, leading to the French Revolution. PRC's own Bernard Addison is portraying Figaro. He will be joined by three guest artists: Johanna Jackson as Marceilina, Terrence Caza as Count Almaviva and Mary O'Brady as Rosina, the Countess Almaviva. Previews for the play are Sept. 21 and 23. Opening night is Sept. 24, and the play will run through Oct. 9. Ticket information is available for any PRC production at 962-1 122. The second production PRC will . undertake is "The Road to Mecca," which begins Oct.' 26. Christian Angermann will direct the work by South African playwright Athol Fugard. The play deals with the issues of aging and independence through the character of Helen, an aging artist who is torn between a priest advising her to move into a home and a friend telling her to remain free. Currently an Off-Broadway critical and popular success, "The Road to Mecca" is being played in only a few regional theaters in the country. Christmas will see the return of Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales," opening Nov. 30. Adapted by Jeremy Brooks and Adrian Mit chell from Thomas' poem, the play is a wistful and fun memory of many childhood Christmases in a remote Welsh village. Angermann will also direct this play. With the new year, PRC will present new talent in the form of Elizabeth Spencer, an acclaimed . - SV : 111 A V f PlayMakers will soon present one of Elizabeth Spencer's works Southern novelist who is trying her hand at drama with "For Lease or Sale." Spencer, an instructor in the creative writing program, began the play several years ago while living in Canada. When she came to UNC in 1986, she mentioned the play to PRC Executive Producer Milly Barranger. "She immediately took an interest in it," Spencer said. During a reading of the play, Spencer said, artistic director David Hammond listened in. "He was taken with the situation and characters, too," she added. Hammond and Spencer worked for a month during the summer to trim the four and a half hour play to two hours. "I'm a novelist turned dramatist," she said. "IVe learned a great deal." "For Lease or Sale" will open Jan. 25 with Hammond directing. The story is set in a Mississippi town where a man returns just as his family home is about to be torn down for real estate development. The PRC will also put on Bernard Shaw's play "Misalliance." PRC's own artist Steven Pounders said that this play is what he is most looking forward to for the year. "I'm a great fan of Shaw," he said. PRC will announce a guest artist for the comedy at a later date. Shaw uses the stage as a scene for a scramble between parental and children's views of marriage, discovered when a Polish aviatrix parachutes into the lawn of an exclusive summerhouse. The last play of the PRC season has not been selected, but it will be a work by Shakespeare. If Kyle MacLachlan is available, PRC will produce "Hamlet," with the star of "Blue Velvet" and "Dune" in the lead role. Otherwise, PRC will produce "Taming of the Shrew," the comedy of love and war between Kate and Petruchio. Either way, Hammond will direct the Shakespearean seg ment of the season. PRC received two gifts recently that will help the productions reach the stage. Exxon presented money to enable the staff to purchase a steam generator for the costume depart ment. A steam generator is used to operate two dye vats, enabling truer and more even colors in larger quantities of fabric, managing direc tor Margaret Hahn said. "In the past, we have had to use dyeing facilites as far away as High Point or make do with large pots heated over hot plates," Hahn said. "It is the crowning piece to the renovation of the painting and dyeing done in the costume shop." Other donations for renovation were made by Mrs. Jack Welch and the Kyser Foundation. The other gift is a benefit from Glaxo Inc. which will help fund performances for high school and junior high school students during the 1988-89 Educational Matinee Series. In the past decade, PRC has reached more than 25,000 students through the program.
