The Tar Heels are coming off their best season in school history, as they posted an impressive 19-2 slate and closed the year with their second consecutive postseason No. 1 ranking. From start to finish, North Carol ina controlled the play on the friendly confines of Astroturf Field. Junior Julie Blaisse broke the ice and scored the Tar Heels' first goal of the year at the 10:38 mark. Blaisse drilled a slapshot between a host of High-, lander defenders into the upper corner of the goal. A little over two minutes later, Blaisse netted her second score of the night on a penalty-corner shot. The goal was assisted by both Leslie Lyness and Jennifer Anderson. Junior Kathy Staley converted the Tar Heels third goal of the night at the 3:33 mark, with an assist from freshman Cathy Osmers. Osmers sent a centering pass that trickled through the goal crease, where Staley picked the ball up and flipped it over Radford goalkeeper Kelly Gill to push the Tar Heels' lead to 3-0. Freshman Osmers was thrilled to get her first assist. ttI was really excited," said the native of Doylestown, Pa. "I was glad I got an assist rather than scoring a goal. I was just so happy that I was able to assist Kathy, because she is such a great player." Peggy Anthon, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., tallied North Carol ina's fourth goal of the chilly evening at the 1:18 mark of the first half. Anthon broke into the opening to the right of Gill, then blistered a beautiful crossing shot that deflected off Gill's shoulder into the nylon. When half time finally arrived, North Carolina had an overpowering 4-0 lead. The Tar Heels completely dominated all phases of the game: they outshot Radford 16-0, and held a 10-0 advantage in penalty-corner shots taken. - t The second half was almost iden tical to the first half. The Tar Heels came out very aggressive and kept the pressure on the Radford defense all night. At the 31:14 mark, Lyness chalked up her first goal of the year on a penalty shot. The junior from Paoli, Pa., scorched the penalty stroke to the left of the leaping Gill. Staley added her second goal of the night at the 17:59 mark to vault the Tar Heels to a 6-0 cushion. The Endicott, N.Y., native picked up a loose ball and neatly tucked it underneath Gill. Staley was pleased with the team's performance in the season-opening win. MI think we played .well, and this win will certainly give us a lot of confidence," she said. "We did a really good job of passing the ball to the right people tonight. The win will give us a good boost, but we still have to work hard in practice to prepare for our tougher opponents." Then, at the 14:02 mark, Blaisse netted her hat trick. After a, crisp, cross-field pass from senior Sharon Ross, Blaisse rocketed a backhand by a frozen Gill to stake the Tar Heels to a 7-0 advantage. The goal was the 39th of Blaisse's career. "We had a very fun game tonight," Blaisse said. "We Ye been practicing for a long time against each other, and it was nice to finally play someone else. It's great to start the year with a big victory, but we have to continue to work hard in practice." Rounding out the scoring on the evening was sophomore Laurel Her shey, at the 7:14 mark. Hershey whipped a shot that deflected off Gill into the far corner of the net. The, Tar Heels' next game will be against a strong Maine squad in Boston on Sept. 16. Campbell shocks From staff reports BUIES CREEK The third ranked North Carolina men's soccer squad continued its. early-season struggles Wednesday, dropping a 2 1 decision to Campbell University."
