Jackets get out of ACC cellar
By ANDREW PODOLSKY
Assistant Sports Editor
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
still ache from last year's 2-9 season.
They experienced their first winless
ACC season since joining the league
in 1979 and had everything bad
happen to them, including injuries,
ineligibilities and a lack of depth.
But coach Bobby Ross is ready to
start his second year with a clean
slate.
"Last year was a frustrating season
for all of us," Ross said. "It started
to snowball. What we've attempted
to do is build from that and have
a good spring. We're not world
beaters yet, but we're going to be
better."
The term "rebuilding year" comes
readily to mind, but Tech has the
punch to surprise some people.
Granted, they have little overall speed
and won't be vying for the conference
title in late November. But a six-win
season is highly possible. .
With seven freshmen and sopho-1
mores in the starting 22 and 14
starters returning, the team will have
a much-needed new look.
"We will be playing a lot of redshirt
freshmen," Ross said, "and they will
be playing major roles for us."
That comment may answer one of
the season s biggest questions: Who
will play quarterback?
Possibilities include senior Todd
Rampley, Mike Rhodes and Scott
Aldridge, but redshirt freshman Lee
Williamson has looked good in
practice and will likely take over.
The Jackets offense, which aver
aged a hefty 33 passes per game in
'87, returns seven starters. The
Atlanta skyline will likely be filled
with flying footballs again this year
as both starting receivers return.
Greg Lester, The Sporting News'
top freshman receiver last year (33
catches, 593 yards), is back, along
with Steve Davenport (29 catches, 5
TDs). Alonzo Watson or Jim Gal
lagher will be at tight end, taking the
place of Chris Caudle, who died in
a tragic boating accident in May.
But even if they cant pass, the
Jackets can definitely run. Jerry
Mays, the 1985 ACC Rookie of the
Year, is back after missing 1987 with
an injury. Alphanzo Thomas (339
yards) and Duke transfer T.J.
Edwards may see a lot of action, too.
Sophomore Stefan Scotton returns at
fullback:
But if this weak offense is to
survive, , it will have to lean on its
strong offensive line, which has four
starters back. Senior center Eric
Bearden (6-2, 254), sophomore guard
Joe Siffri (6-5, 280) and tackles Jessie

The Maryland Terrapins enter the
1988 season with only 10 starters
returning from last year's 4-7 team.
This year's schedule includes non
conference games against West Vir
ginia, Syracuse and Penn State all
on the road. The Terps' top four
players from last year are long gone.
Could this be the year that Mary
. land gets a taste of the ACC cellar?

Tech 'backer WHHs Crockett will
Marion (6-4, 273) and Darryl Jenkins
(6-5, 283) will be joined by former
starter Scott Beavers (6-4, 273).
The offense is slowly taking shape,
but then, offense was never a prob
lem. A larger concern is the 278 points"
the defense gave up last year. Ross
remembers that figure, as do the seven
returning defensive starters.
Two-year starter Willie Burks
moved to nose guard, and he will be
flanked by Sean Smith and either
Chris Simmons or Jeremiah
McClary. Anyone who gets past these
guys will most definitely be stopped
by a strong linebacking corps, . the
strongest point of this young team.
Willis Crockett and George
Malone are on the outside, with Eric
Thomas and probably Rod Stephens
..headed for cellar
Krivak doesnt think so. "With our
last two recruiting classes, we've
brought in over 50 youngsters,"
Krivak said. "The key now is to build,
upon that. We have a lot of good
young players in the program, and
we also have good depth with upper
classmen at certain positions."
. Yes, Joe, but the question is not
how many players you have, it's how
good those players are. If the end of
last season is any indication, Mary
land could be in real trouble. The

lead an experienced defense
on inside. Each is great, but, more
importantly, each is backed by
second-stringers who are just as good.
Injuries wont affect this midsection,
which is the heart and soul of the
team.
But a smart team will avoid all this
trouble and shodt for the weak
secondary. The secondary is expe
rienced experienced at getting their
rear-ends burned, that is. (Remember
UNC's big 1987 comeback, when
Mark Maye threw for 406 yards and
four touchdowns? Tech sure does).
Cedric Stallworth is fairly compe
tent, and he will be joined by one
of three newcomers. Jay Martin and
Andre Thomas will roam the middle

Terps lost their final four games by
a grand total of 57 points. Their new
quarterback, junior Neil O'Donnell,
started those four eames and couldnt
put them over the top.
Take away two of his favorite
targets, tight end Ferrell Edmunds
and wideout Azizuddin Abdur
Ra'oof, both of whom graduated to
NFL careers, and O'Donnell might
have to try Southern Bell to find an
