Those two words ring of success,
victories and national titles. Those
two words strike fear in many an
opponent.
Saturday, at 5 p.m., the two words
wont be just words to North Carolina
fans anymore. They will be maroon
clad football players live and in
person in refurbished Kenan Sta
dium, lined up across the field from
the Tar Heels.
Mack Brown's troops, coming off
the wrong side of a 31-10 decision
against South Carolina and Ail
American candidate Todd Ellis, will
host the fourth-ranked Sooners in
Oklahoma's season-opener. And the
entire nation will be able to watch
on cable sports-station ESPN.
Oklahoma brings its potent wish

runaway train. Jamelle Holieway is
the Sooners conductor, and he's the
red streak that rushed for 170 yards
during Oklahoma's 28-0 whitewash of
UNC last year in Norman, Okla. ,
But Holieway is not the Sooners'
only big engine. The backfield is again
well-oiled; led by tailback Anthony
Stafford, who averaged 6.9 yards per
rush last season.. As coach Barry
Switzer says, "We don't rebuild; we
reload."
While Oklahoma wants to come
into Kenan with guns firing and the
train rolling, Brown and his Tar Heels
want to limit the big play and slow
the swifter Sooners down in a low
scoring affair.
"We've had concerns about our
overall team speed, and here we're
. playing probably the fastest team in
the country," Brown said Tuesday

during his weekly press conference.
"For us to win weVe got to play
as good as we can possibly play," he
said. "WeVe got to control the ball
against one of the top defenses in the
country, and we need them to help
us. If they do their job and not put
the ball on the ground (fumble) we
don't have a chance to stay in the .
ball game.
"We need to play perfect."
Perfection might be a tall order for
the Tar Heels, who enter Saturday's
home-opener as 24-point underdogs.
Senior inside linebacker Mitch Wike
will not be in uniform. Wike suffered
a pref orated small intestine during the
South Carolina game and his football
future is in question. Tight end John
Keller is questionable with a shoulder
injury.
But even with the Tar Heels' injury
problems, Switzer is still concerned
with his team's defense.
"WeVe got more. question marks
defensively than anywhere else,"
Switzer said. "I'm concerned with the
depth of our linebacker corps and our
inexperience in the secondary."
In the past, the Sooner linebackers
have been the heart of the defense,
frequently rated as among the
nation's best. Brian Bosworth, Dante
Jones and Paul Mipliazzo are but a
few of the examples. This year,
however, new faces like Kert Kaspar
and Frank Blevins will start for the
Sooners.
Kaspar is a senior who has lettered
twice, yet never has been a full-time
starter. Blevins is a sophomore who
was slated to back up Kaspar on the
strong side of the Sooners' "50"
defense.
Defense is also a concern for the
Tar Heels and Brown.
"Our defense will play hard against
them just as it did against South
Carolina," said Brown, who was
Switzer's offensive coordinator in
1984. "But the thing they can do is
kill you on a reverse with their speed
or on a busted play when a guy runs
out the back side to score.
"They have guys who are All
Americas waiting to happen!"
UNC does have some weapons of
its own, though. North Carolina has
won 17 of its last 19 home openers,
and an extra 2,100 fans will be in
expanded Kenan to cheer for the Tar
Heels, who will be decked out in new
uniforms and light blue helmets with
"NC" on the side.
More importantly, the Tar Heels
feature wide receiver Randy Marri
ott, who moved, from 18th to 12th
place on UNC's all-time receiving list
last weekend after catching six passes.
Tailback Torin Dorn will also be one
of the Tar Heels big guns. Dorn
rushed for 66 yards on 14 carries
against South Carolina and figures
to see the ball just as much against
OU.
But again, the biggest thing for the
Tar Heels Saturday will not be points
for, but points against.
UNC will go into the game with
a very young defensive team that has
but one senior, outside linebacker
Antonio Goss. Goss and junior strong
safety Dan Vooletich are the only
players in the starting lineup who
started each game last year.
Those two will lead the Tar Heel
unit against Holieway and the pow
erful Sooner offense, an offense that
Switzer has the utmost confidence in.
"I feel good about it," Switzer said.
"The changes we made in theiast few
days make us a better football team
