10The Daily Tar HeelMonday, September 12, 1988 Football from page 12 big plays in the option game. "They played very well. They didn't turn the ball over like they had to for us to have a chance to win the ballgame." Oklahoma did fumble seven times Saturday, but just two of the miscues were recovered by the Tar Heels. The Sooners piled up 463 yards of total offense on the evening, including 391 on the ground, and held a 34:23-25:37 advantage in time of possession. Stafford led the way statistically for OU, picking up 86 yards on 12 carries. Freshman Mike Gaddis added 56 yards on just five carries, while Thompson and Holieway rushed for 51 and 47 yards, respectively. Oklahoma threw just six times, completing three of them for 72 yards. The Sooners were just as dominant on defense, and perhaps more so. "They (UNC) couldn't run the ball against us," Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said, "and if you can't fun you generally can't win." Indeed, the Tar Heels' leading rusher Saturday was Jonathan Hall, the backup quarterback, who carried 10 times for 56 yards. Tailback Torin Dora was held to just eight yards on three tries. Overall, UNC gained 255 yards in total offense. But most of those yards came between the 30s, as the Tar Heels' deepest penetration was to the Oklahoma 24 on their final drive. But Hall was intercepted in the end zone by Jerry Parks with 40 seconds left to seal the shutout. "I think we did move the ball well enough against them; we just didn't move it well enough to get anything ,on the board," said Hall, who split time with redshirt frosh Deems May Heels and was 3-of-13 passing for 52 yards. "We had every reason to believe we could score on Oklahoma. I couldn't put "a number on it. I had no idea we'd have zero, that's for sure. "We tried to do everything we'd normally do. But we made some crucial mistakes, and we couldn't afford to make those mistakes. There were a lot of mental errors." May, who went 9-for-19 through the air for 87 yards, committed the first of those UNC mental 'errors just five minutes into the game. On third and six from the OU 35, May's short pass over the middle went behind Kennard Martin, the intended . from page 12 receiver, and was intercepted by Scott Garl. , ; Oklahoma proceeded to blaze its way to paydirt in 10 efficient plays, with Stafford's. 23-yard carry to the UNC 4 being the longest gain. With 5:57 left in the first quarter, it was 7-0 Sooners. UNC reached the OU 39 on the ensuing possession before stalling, and the Sooners answered by going 80 yards in eight plays. Gaddis' 33 yard pickup on second and 12 from the UNC 43 was the highlight of the drive, which Thompson capped himself at the 1:17 mark of the opening quarter. The Tar Heels then went three-downs-and-out, enabling the Sooners to stretch their margin to 21-0 midway through the second period when Stafford scored on a critical fourth-and-goal play. Compared 'to Blount, Dwight Hollier is a veteran. The Hampton, Va., native was redshirted last year, and he so impressed the new coaching staff last spring that he nailed down a starting linebacker spot before school let out for the year. He has been in the middle of the action for two games now and had six tackles Saturday. "That kind of speed is surprising, he said. "The coaches told us how fast they were, and the scout team ran the wishbone last week, but there's no way they could run as fast as Oklahoma did." But every cloud, or loss, has a silver lining, and Hollier said he knows what this one was. VftSS'IY&gg "WANDA" fi 1 I1 it WhGUMOfT 2:00 4:00 7:30, j 9:30 ' m2 1 I EXTHA LATE SHOWS II MFftl. SAT. First Fall Meeting Monday, Sept. 12 9:00 pm Room 226 Carolina Union "Maybe playing these types of teams will give us a jump on the ACC," he said. "No one else in the conference started with teams like this." Count starting quarterback Deems May among those youngsters, too. After a Sooner defensive lineman tried to root May's shoulder into the Kenan Stadium turf in the second quarter, the Lexington native came back to alternate with Jonathan Hall the rest of the game. Afterwards, he seemed impressed with the Sooners. "I tell you what, they had some real good athletes on defense," he said. "They hit hard." For Tar Heel head man Mack Brown, playing his young guys right off the bat isn't anything to worry about. Sure, he would rather redshirt them and give them time to mature v and get used to college, but Brown just doesn't have that luxury right now. Still, it didn't seem to bother him, and, as always, he was eager to answer the question about his young charges. "Obviously, we don't want to have those freshmen playing this early, but the thing IVe been proud of is they've kept their heads up and they're playing as hard as possible," he said. "And that's all you can ask for. "Sometimes they'll make a wrong move or go too far on a pass route, but that's what an experienced player will do for you." All in all, Brown has to be satisfied with his team's effort thus far this season. As a whole, most of the players didn't look too down with Saturday's loss. So while the Tar Heels are indeed 0-2, and Brown has yet to get his first win at UNC, you have to look at it in perspective his young squad has already seen probably the two best two teams they will see this year, and they have to be happy about that. rm ram msm 32m (r TOEID)MElil)AY- MEN'S SOCCER vs. Georgia Southern 2s(D)(D)IPM METTEIEIK. Seventh ranked Clemson scored the game's first two goals and held on to defeat the third-ranked North Carolina men's soccer squad 2-1 Sunday before 4,258 at Riggs Field. The Tigers are a perfect .4-0, while the Tar Heels continued their early season demise, dropping to 1-3. Clemson opened the scoring on James Grimes' goal from 15 yards away off a Pearse Tormey assist at the 35:38 mark. The Tigers made it 2-0 2:51 into the second half on a David Fortner goal, with Tormey again assisting. The Tar Heels came back to cut the margin to one, though. Senior back Donald Cogsville scored UNC's lone goal with 20:14 to go in the match as he broke free from midfield and scored unassisted from 10 yards out. ; Each squad had their chances late' in the game to score. Grimes hit the Tar Heel crossbar with one shot, and UNC freshman Adam Tinkham fired a shot that was just a few feet wide of the Tiger goal. For the Tar Heels, senior goal- keeper Darren Royer, back from a foot injury that kept him out of the Tar Heels' 2-1 loss to Campbell last Wednesday, had three saves on the day. The Tigers' Kevin Taylor notched two. UNC's next match is also its home opener, against Georgia Southern Wednesday at Fetzer Field at 2 p.m. ' a In Winston-Salem, the UNC men's, and women's cross country teams....'.-, finished third and second, respec tively, in Saturday's Wake Forest Nike Cross Country Invitational. Senior Mike McGowan led the men's squad with a fourth-place, 25:01 finish in the five-mile course. Chuck Lotz, Eric Hichman, Paul 1 Cummings and Andy Pflaum . , rounded out the top five for the Tar Heels, who finished behind Brevard and Clemson with 87 points. . .
