10The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, September 14, 1988 Sports i ii i i mmimmm . , , , , . i i i ,,. ... . . . If you're listening, Bart, don't get rid of the DH Fifteen years ago, the designated hitter was introduced to baseball's American League surrounded by controversy. At the time, the Oakland Athletics were baseball's top team, in the midst of three consecutive world titles. The A's faded for years, but the controversy never wavered. Today, Oakland has risen to the top of baseball once more, and there has been a movement within the baseball community to solve the DH controversy. The designated hitter causes con troversy because it is a rule used in only one of the two major leagues. Its role is to allow an everyday player to bat for the pitcher so each player can concentrate on- his own assignment. Baseball owners, players, experts and fans alike hold their own opin ions as to the appropiateness of the DH to baseball. However, what a large majority of these people do agree on is that Major League Baseball needs to decide whether the designated hitter is to be used in both leagues or not at all. " Network television commentators, mainly NBC's Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola, and syndicated colum nists, Peter Gammons and Tracy Ringolsby being the major culprits, have publicly started to put pressure upon MLB to solve its split ruling on the DH. And with the naming of A. Bartlett Giamatti to baseball's most sacred post of commissioner, it seems likely that this controversy will be solved. Giamatti, the present National League president, is staunchly against the DH, and the Doug Hoogervorsti Opinion position's days may be numbered. I'm here to speak out and warn all those who can hear me that this would be a grave mistake, that either eliminating the DH or spreading it to both leagues is not the answer. The best thing baseball could do for itself is to keep its policy on the designated hitter status quo. Baseball is America's pastime. It was invented in Cooperstown, N.Y., but basketball and football are American-originated sports having their birthplaces in Springfield, Mass., and Canton, Ohio, respec tively. So baseball isn't America's pastime just because it was made in the U.S. Baseball is America's pastime because it has always done things a little differently than all the other sports. No clock places a time limit upon our game. No set boundaries hem in our pastime except for fences placed at arbitrary distances (no two have to be the same). So why can't baseball have two leagues that play by slightly (I use this word loosely) different rules? The usage of the DH exclusively in the American League has caused the leagues to stray in styles of play. The American League style is to play for the big inning with the three-run homer (as Oakland does, for instance). These teams play in older, smaller parks with grass fields, where the power of a nine-man lineup is used Viyg "nAflDA'Igyr "CAFE" r"" - -- -1 '". i 1 1 1 i ggM i i ii u . . i ii i 1 l ft ! The National League attempts to manufacture runs one at a time using the stolen base and sacrifice bunt (St. Louis is a prime example). The larger stadiums using Astroturf lend them selves to the speedy defensive style that is played. This result due to the split usage of the DH is a fortunate accident for MLB. The All-Star game and World Series are no longer just meetings between the two leagues, but clashes of the two styles of play, which lend themselves to fuller enjoyment for the fan. Extending the DH to both leagues or eliminating it would start to deteriorate the styles put together for the past 15 years. This cannot happen, because the average fan likes baseball more trfan ever today. This is known because the fan voices his opinion of the game through his attendance, and new attendance records are being set each year. Baseball is more popular than ever. Those for settling the matter of the DH set forth the arguments that it does not lead to continuity in baseball and is confusing and unfair in the inter-league matchups, like the All Star Game and the World Series. I have refuted the fact that con tinuity is necessary in baseball by proving that the opposite is true. Baseball needs the personality the split-league DH brings. The answer to the inter-league matchups of the All-Star Game and World Series is to play by the rules of the home park. The games must alternate from American League park to National League park each year, though. In an All-Star Game, playing with the DH is not a disadvantage to the National League since both benches are stocked with many great hitters. Nor is it a disadvantage for the American League pitcher to bat, since the pinch hitter is an option of the A.L. manager, who has eight or 10 of the league's best pitchers available to utilize. The true test of a championship caliber team is its ability to overcome adversity. In the Series, playing with or without the DH could be such adversity. However, the teams do have to play with both sets of rules since the Series changes parks on a set system. Thus, the adversity is held to a minimum. I hope it is clear that at present nothing needs to be done to the designated hitter. Maybe Giamatti has heard of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Are you listening, Bart?
