Jones Ferry Rd. Carrboro .CM il By BRENDAN MATHEWS Staff Writer . Behind three goals from sopho more forward Derek Missimo, the UNC men's soccer team ended its slide Wednesday with a 6-0 win over Georgia Southern. The victory ups the Tar Heels' recbrd to 2-3, a disappointment for a team picked to contend for the national title. The way North Carolina played in the first half made it easy to under stand why the Tar Heels are in such dire straits. They suffered from control problems . throughout, miss ing passes and hurrying their shots on goal. North Carolina bounced the ball off the left post, the crossbar, and fired above the net from in close before its luck finally changed. At 24:20, Donald Cogsville blazed one across the turf from 30 yards out, past the diving Nathan Carey. That would prove to be all UNC would need to win, and for the rest of the first half all the Tar Heels would get. Cogsville took on and beat three Georgia Southern defenders at 30:1 1, but kicked wide to the left on a tight angle. UNC had a few near misses late in the half. A Dino Megaloudis corner kick at 34:30 set off a scramble in front of the Eagles' goal that yielded three shots at the net but no points for the Tar Heels. Georgia Southern never threatened to score, and rarely even brought the ball into North Carolina territory. The half ended with the Tar Heels outshooting the Eagles 17-1. Noticeably absent from the attack was Missimo, who scored 13 goals as a freshman but had racked up only one assist in his first four games. But all of that changed in the second half as Missimo raged through the Geor gia Southern defense for three goals and two assists. ' "When you're a forward you feel the pressure to score," UNC coach Anson Dorrance said. "That's been on Derek's mind. Today has to be a real confidence builder for him." The team's performance in the second half had to be a confidence builder for all of the Tar Heels. UNC came out strong immediately, playing like the team that made it to last year's Final Four. At the front of the assault was Missimo, who weaved through diving Georgia Southern defenders like they were fallen logs. Missimo struck quickly, barely breaking stride as he fired into the corner from in close at 50:45. The Tar Heels stepped up the pace, and at 58:32 Missimo took the assist from midfielder Chad Ashton on a ricochet into net. Forward Jim Gourlay increased the margin, lobbing the assist from Missimo over outstretched Georgia Southern goalie Kevin Chambers. Minutes later Donald Cogsville gave a lesson in textbook soccer, faking the returned Nathan farpv nut nf K5c Mitres and rolling the ball to make it 5-0. With time running out, Missimo; topped off the day with his second; career hat trick. At 80: 17 he recovered ; his own blocked shot and fired dead : center for the unassisted goal. : The combination of a relentless Tar ; Heel attack and the oppressive heat; on Fetzer Field wilted the Georgia' Southern offense as well as the, defense. The Eagles finished the game ; with only three shots and one corner: kick, compared to 33 shots and 12; corners for UNC. In the game's ; closing minutes, the Eagles play fell apart as their attitude shifted from; "we can still win this one" to "let's just try not to get shut out." i Afterward, Dorrance was pleased; with the win, but hoping that it had ; been number three or four for the; season, rather then number two. "We1 were hoping to get out with a win, and it's a good one, epecially by the; margin of victory," he said. "It stops; the slide. The win pulls us up out of; the slump and gets us going."
