The Daily Tar Heel Friday, September 16, 19885 Mainiual.e By JAMES BENTON Staff Writer A guide to undergraduate majors printed this summer and distributed to freshmen during orientation will ' be made available to upperclassmen on a limited basis, University officials said Thursday. The Undergraduate Majors Man ual lists courses and grade point average requirements for all under graduate degrees, as well as graduate school and career opportunities. The manual also includes informa tion about special opportunities like ram teaches rog By ANDREW WATERS Staff Writer . A new program to teach English to foreign teaching assistants (TAs) began Monday, sponsored by Stu dent Government and some academic departments. r Instructors from Durham Techni cal Institute will teach the classes, coordinated by the UNC Center for Teaching and Learning. Bobby Wagoner, assistant director for Continuing Education, said the program was created in response to requests from some departments and from Bobby Ferris, executive branch representative for Student Government. Kay Leaman, program coordina tor for Durham Technical Institute, Uoperclassmmeo to offer academic advice By NANCY WYKLE Staff Writer Student Government officials are planning a peer advising program that will give General College stu dents a new source for academic information, officials said Thursday. The program will provide a one-on-one situation for students who want another student's perspective of classes and majors before making choices, said Chris Peeler, executive assistant in charge of the project. The Executive Branch of Student Government is setting up a progam to train upperclassmen to advise General College students. Last year, the program was aban I " "' The program has been successful so far, Loughran said. 'Police Chief 'Arnold Gold visited two fraternities this week and is scheduled to speak at others soon. It is important to Loughran that students are recognized as "respon ' sible citizens" by the town. "This position shows that the student body of UNC is concerned with the policies of the Chapel Hill Town Council," he said. Precautions In case of extreme emergency, a woman who can't find an escort or transportation home should call University police for an escort. But women should only use this service as a last resort, he said. Victims of assault should fight back if possible, Comar said. "A person has the right to fight back without being seen as a crim-, inal," he said, "You have the right Funding from page 1 "You'd never expect to get very much of what you asked for in the change-budget process," said James Vaughn, assistant dean for fiscal affairs in the medical school. Gilhan Cell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said she requested funding for additional clerks and secretaries, and technical personnel for science departments. She said she also requested money for a new program to strengthen writing across the curriculum. The top fiscal priority for the system as a whole is faculty compen sation, which includes salaries as well as benefits, Spangler said. The purpose of such funds is to "retain the good faculty and be an incentive to good faculty to come to ,your university," he said. IllOn from page 1 It's obvious that his background might have given him the idea to raise tuition. "The idea in and of itself is not bad we just need to be careful. It needs to be looked at not in general terms, but with figures. What are the costs and what are the benefits? Then we can weigh those and make a decision." internships and research, scholarships and academic honors. Several depart- , ments provided semester breakdowns of classes for their degree programs. Six copies of the 149-page manual are on reserve at the Undergraduate Library. Students who need informa tion from the manual can make photocopies. The manual is a better source for academic information than bulletins or the Undergraduate Catalog because it provides an opportunity to "get all revisions during the academic year in printed forms," said Donald said the classes will be held on campus every Monday and Wednesday but that there was a small turnout on Monday's first class. "The course is for people who need training in all aspects of English," she said. "We teach the TAs how to present themselves in front of stu dents, English-speaking skills and. how to prepare for class." The program also gives the TAs the opportunity to practice teaching in front of groups, Leaman said. Gillian Cell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said TAs who speak English as a second language must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language, which tests pro ficiency in written English. There is doned because of the possibility of invading students' private academic records. That is no longer a problem, because student advisers will not have access to records, Peeler said. Student Body President Kevin Martin said, "Seniors oftentimes can be the best advisers because they have gone through the class as a student, not as a faculty member." Peeler said most advisers will be seniors, along with a few juniors. He said he wants to work with students already involved in helping under classmen through the Senior Buddy program. Student advisers must go through a training session, Peeler said. They Town council member Nancy Preston said she believes the student liaison position is an excellent idea. , The liaison will supply the council with an additional voice, Preston said. "It is important to have someone who understands other aspects of the community not represented on the town council," she said. Student Body President Kevin Martin said, "Students should be kept from page 1 to fight back with whatever is necessary." Anyone who is assaulted should report the incident so police can try to prosecute the offender. "Let's take whatever legal steps it takes to get these criminals away from college people," Comar said. Norton said date and acquaintance rape, or "forced intercourse," is the largest sexual assault problem on the UNC campus,, and that women should be just as aware of this threat as they are of rape by strangers. Be a Music Biz Authority! Take the Ultimate Music Trivia Test! Jicha, dean of the General College. Departmental bulletins may be outdated as soon as they are pub lished, and the Undergraduate Catalog gives a mostly historical look at the departments, he said. The manual was printed this summer and distributed to freshmen at Carolina Testing and Orientation Program for Students (CTOPS), Jicha said. The freshmen paid for the manual out of their orientation fees. There are no plans to print and distribute the manual to upperclass English to foreign Ms no current requirement for profi ciency in spoken English, she said. Although the class is a step towards English proficiency for the foreign TAs, some officals said the program can't be effective unless it is mandatory. "We need an oral proficiency test," said Ed Neal, director of instructor training at the the Center for Teach ing and Learning. "With an oral test, the University can identify the people who need help and require them to take a class. "Until the TAs are forced to take the course, well never have more than a few (who attend)," Neal said. Ferris said the class offered by Durham Tech is a temporary measure until the University implements its will answer only basic questions, and students seeking advice will still need their General College adviser's per mission to make permanent decisions. General College advisers will also have records of all activities taking place with student advisers. Peeler said he will use the new Undergrad uate Majors Manual as one of the guides to instruct the students. Chancellor Paul Hardin supports the idea, but Peeler said the commit tee would also like to get the approval of Gillian Cell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Donald Jicha, associate dean of the General College. : informed on the concerns of the town." Martin said he believes the addition of a student liaison will establish a constant flow of communication between students and town government. Reprinting the manual could result in excess duplication, he said. "(Upperclassmen) may not want all of it," he said. "They may chuck 90 percent of it and keep 10 percent of the manual." It is more efficient to keep six copies available in the Undergraduate Library than to needlessly duplicate the manual, Jicha said. Officials plan to print the manual and distribute it to high school guidance counselors across the state own permanent program.. Student Government and the Col lege of Arts and Sciences offered a more intensive course, given every day for one week, during the first week in September, Ferris said. "The course we (Student Govern ment) offered this month was only a groundbreaking device for a formal institutionalized course that the College of Arts and Sciences and Student Government will implement either this spring or next fall," Ferris said. "This will represent UNC solving its problems from the inside," he said. ' "We're glad Durham Tech is helping us out, but it will only be until we implement our own course." Jicha said the program might encourage students to make decisions based on hearsay, not on research. "If students are well informed, at least using some guidelines or basic information, that's one . thing," he said. "If they start going too much from what they believe is true, that's another. Any student involvement like this is very healthy, though, if it's done properly." Although the program is designed mainly to help freshmen and sopho mores, anyone who needs to ask a basic question about a course selec tion or who just wants general1 academic information is welcome, Peeler said. from page 1 A lack' of understanding between the two parties has hampered com munication, Martin said. Loughran, as the student liaison, may be able to bridge this gap and represent the best interests of the student body, he added. The manual gives departments the chance to describe any research grants and internships they offer as well as describe requirements for majors. The manual will be revised as late as possible in the spring so it can have the most up-to-date information, Jicha said. Judy Hallman, manager of infor mation services at the Academic Listen up! Ticketron has a new phone number From staff reports SEX!!! Good, now that I have your attention, Ticketron has changed its phone number. The new number is (800) 543 3041. Use it when ordering your Def Leppard tickets after 10 a.m. today. So far, the number has changed without a ripple, mainly because they really didn't tell anyone. Officals at Ticketron said they didnt publicize the change heav ily, but apparently didn't know why they didn't. "Ticketron has located a new center in Virginia Beach, Virgi nia," a spokesman at Ticketron said. "That eases the load on our Hackensack (N.J.) office." Well, we certainly wouldn't want to overload them, would we? Considering how hard it is to get through when tickets go on sale, the new number is a blessing. Smith Center director Jeff Elliott agreed, saying that the problems would be overcome after the confusion had passed. Information on academic majors would be needed in print and there are no plans to connect printers with computers on the system, she said. But the manual may be entered on the system later. us," he said. "The new line will make it easier for people to get' through." , Another problem that has arisen is the Def Leppard ticket distribution. Not nly has the phone number changed, but the distribution for the Chapel Hill concert is the same day (Friday) as for the Charlotte concert. The problem comes in when you try to phone-order tickets for the Chapel Hill concert and don't specify enough times that you want DEAN SMITH CENTER, CHAPEL HILL tickets. You might wind up with Charlotte tickets. Smith Center official Deana Nail said the confusion in the computers could be a major problem, even at the local level. "Let the seller know you want tickets for here," she explained. "Then check your tickets when you have them in hand. If they aren't correct, bring them to their attention immediately."
