Wyoming coach Paul Roach has seen a lot of comebacks, but none as dramatic as the one that propelled the undefeated Cowboys into the Associated Press top 20 college football poll for the first time in almost two decades. ; While watching Wyoming battle back Saturday from a 38-17 deficit after three quarters against Air Force, Roach realized he was witnessing a great comeback. It was an amazing comeback," Roach said Monday, still wondering how the Cowboys, 4-0, pulled out the 48-45 victory. r nxnonrnro mm INDS THUZSOAT! IDC tin 11 nautili n v. 1 .air'r'r,,rTw K m. mm. Ewing. , But to those in the know, specif ically those involved with the men's soccer program, Dallas and its surrounding areas have meant much morehan that. Eight players, nearly a third of the Tar Heels' roster, originate from Texas, and seven of those eight are from the Dallas area. Among them are forward and leading scorer Derek Missimo and goalie Herb Sherry, along with three other starters and three strong freshman recruits. This Texas Connection, according to head coach Anson Dorrance, is the result of a deliberate recruiting effort AP Top 20 1. "The thing I like about the Dallas kids in general is that they come from a soccer background," Dorrance said. "The coaching in Dallas is very good, and as a result the players that come in here from Dallas are sophisticated and they're ready to play at this level. "So one of our recruiting goals is to get the top male and female player out of Dallas every year." The recent wave of Texans on the men's team began with junior back Marc Buffin, who came to North Carolina two years ago. Then last year Missimo and midfielder Nick Efthimiou were added. This year's recruiting class includes junior mid fielder Alan Higgins and freshmen Sherry, Matt Morgan, Richard Wachsman and Greg McConnell, who is from Austin. "I guess you could say Marc started the trend," Missimo said. Among other reasons, soccer in Dallas is strong because of a very competitive club program and the Dallas Cup, a major international youth tournament which gives Dallas players a chance to face some of the best competition in the world. High population numbers and the financial support to feed and back up these programs combine to make Dallas, along with areas in California and New York, a prime location for youth soccer. According to Missimo, the athletes bred in Texas differ from. those of other areas in that they involve more finesse than force on the playing field. "You can see the different styles of play," Missimo said. "In Texas it's more of a thinking game. You don't get the best athletes; you get really mature soccer players whoVe had such great coaching backgrounds that they're all thinkers. "They're not really physical-type IP fif) American Hoart Lf Association WE'RE FIGHTING FOR VDURUFE ELLIOT ROAD at E. It's more of a skillful style." Unfortunately, the amount of quality soccer in Texas drops off substantially at the college level. "There's only one good school in Texas as far as soccer goes, and that's SMU," Efthimiou said. "The rest of the schools don't have competitive programs because they don't have that many scholarships to give." As a result, some of the best Dallas players leave Texas in search of more money and better competition. For many, the quest ends in the ACC, which boasts the last two NCAA champions (Duke and Clemson, respectively) and the best soccer conference in the nation. "It's the toughest conference, as far as soccer goes," Morgan said. "So youH see a lot of players from Dallas in ACC schools." Once a Dallas player has decided he wants to play in the ACC, his choice then comes down to which ACC school to attend. For many at "I didn't pick Carolina because of soccer," Missimo said. "I picked it personally because of the people that run it, the coaches and the aspect of ' what the school's about. This place . has everything." Dorrance's first Dallas recruit was women's player Janet Rayfield, whom he netted in 1979 and who also : happened to be the first recruit ever for the fledgling women's program. The first men's player from the area 1 was John Boettigheimer, a forward . ' from Richardson, Texas, who came 1 that year too. "Those two came, and then ever ! since we've been trying to get our share of Dallas players," Dorrance said. At first, most of Dorrance's efforts in Dallas involved the women's ' program, but once he was firmly1 established as a recruiter there, he , , began to pull in nien as well. "The reputation of our women's .. program and the fact that the women r liked the campus so much I think J influenced some of the men in Dallas to give it a shot," Dorrance said. o Now, the men from Texas "out- . number the women by four. On the v women's team are senior midfielder -'. Tracey Bates, junior back Carla Werden and freshmen Chris Huston -. and Stacey Blazo. This year Dorrance is again look- ' ing to the Dallas area for prospects, but he will try to open some new markets as well. "We always try to get the top players over there," he said. "This : year won't be any exception, and well 1 1 -1 C .1 nave a goou cnance- oi geiiing mem i r . r n uwwausb vi uui i ipuiaiiwii ill lianas.. . Although what's happening now, given the nature of the ACC, is that there will be an opportunity for us to recruit anywhere because everyone wants to play in the conference."
