Soviets teach
ins and outs of fast
By DAVE GLENN
Assistant Sports Editor
Isn't glasnost great?
When the Soviet Union's Olympic
champion basketball team invaded
the Smith Center Saturday night to
the tune of a 104-93 victory, they left
the Tar Heels with much more than
just an exhibition loss.
They gift-wrapped an offensive
display of fast-break and set-up
offense that must have left UNC
coach Dean Smith dreaming of what
his new up-tempo offense could look
like by the end of the year. The
Soviets' 58.3 field-goal percentage,
compared with the Tar Heels' 32.7
percent, suggested that the Tar Heels
might want to steal an idea or two
from the Soviets' offensive
philosophy.
Smith said he was very impressed
with the Soviets performance in
many aspects of the game.
"The Soviets probably would have
won the NCAA championship last
year on a neutral court and with
international officials,' Smith said.
"They came in here last year without
(7-foor-2 center Arvidas) Sabonis and
won six out of 10 games.
With 15,210 on hand at the Smith
Center for the Soviets' first game of
a nine-game U.S. tour, Sabonis
teamed with fellow NBA draftee
Alexander Volkov to lead the men
in red past the Tar Heels. Sabonis
showed an assortment of strong
moves to the hoop that overpowered
the UNC front line of Scott Williams,
Pete Chilcutt and Kevin Madden.
Volkov's darting drives sparked a
15-2 Soviet run late in the first half
that brought his team back from a
four-point deficit to a commanding
38-29 lead.

shooting, completed numerous
Soviet fast breaks with lay-ups and
dunks to keep the visitors in the game
while their outside shooting was off
the mark.
Sabonis, a hulking pivotman
whose NBA rights belong to the
Portland Trail Blazers, added 23
points of his own and led all players
with 13 rebounds.
UNC's Williams, who led the Tar
Heels with 24 points, cited Volkov
as a big factor in the outcome.
"He's an outstanding basketball
player and he's difficult to handle on
defense, Williams said. "He drives
to the basket well and he has a great
shot from the outside. He reminds
me a lot of (former N.C. State guard)
Vinny Del Negro in that way."
Though behind 42-34 at the break,
the Tar Heels came out flying to open
the second half, with Williams leading
the way.
After Rick Fox and Kevin Madden
hit lay-ups to cut into the Soviet lead,
the Tar Heels began lobbing the ball
inside to Williams.
The 6-foot-10 junior center
responded with a rim-rattling slam off
a Madden feed, a smooth jump hook
over Sabonis and a driving lay-up to
spark a 10-0 Tar Heel run opening
the second half.
The streak did not rattle the veteran
Soviet squad, however, and the Tar
Heels' 45-44 advantage in the opening
minutes was the last lead they would
see all night.
Both teams traded, baskets
throughout the high-scoring second
half, with Williams getting help from
Fox and Madden as the Tar Heels
took the ball to the hoop against the
slower Soviet big men.
With less than seven minutes
remaining, two Jeff Lebo (13 points,
and finished with a 70 on Sunday to
win. The win was the first in Moore's
collegiate career.
North Carolina posted a three
round total of 883 to win, 13 strokes
better than second-place finisher
Kentucky at 896. The rest of the top
five included Augusta (898), East
Tennesee (9u8), and Kent State (908).
ACC foe Duke came in eighth place
at 916.
Other Tar Heel finishes included
sophomore John Aber at 224, sopho
more Tee Burton at 225, and senior
Jay Sawerwine at 231.

but 2-of-14 from the field) free throws
brought the Tar Heels within a
bucket, at 77-75.
Then the Soviets outscored the Tar
Heels 12-4 during the next three
minutes to put the game out of reach.
Three Sabonis lay-ins and 3-point
sharpshooting by Valdemaras Kho
micus and Rimas Kurtinaitas gave the
Soviets an insurmountable 89-79
lead.
The 104-93 final may be an indi
cation that the Tar Heels can learn
a little from the Soviets' combination
of inside and outside scoring.
While the Tar Heels struggled from
the perimeter, the inside play of
Williams, Fox and Co., kept them
in the game. When the Soviets
couldn't hit from the outside, Sabonis
and Volkov took it to the hoop.
But while the Soviets eventually
turned it around and finished nine-of-22
from treyland, the Tar Heels
never got it going.
Maybe during the traditional pre
game exchanging of gifts the Soviets
gave the Tar Heels free copies of their
latest issue of the Offensive Philo
sophy of Basketball.
For a team determined to win by
playing up-tempo basketball, it
couldn't hurt to take a peek.

let down and their fans were seem

North Carolina coach Karen Shel
ton thought the goal may have come
too early.
"As soon as we scored, we wanted
the game to be over," Shelton said.
"We scored early and there was too
much game left."
Shelton wasn't exactly loquacious
following Sunday's saddening loss.
When asked what she would tell her
teary-eyed troops, Shelton admitted
there wasn't much to say.
"I don't have words for a game like
that," she said. "I was really proud
of them. They fought hard until the
final whistle. It's just one of those
unfortunate situations. Old Domin
ion seemed to do nothing wrong. You
have to give them credit."
Old Dominion, which outshot
UNC 19-5 and had 15 penalty corners
to the Tar Heels' four, dominated a
flat UNC team, especially in the first
half. The Lady Monarchs recorded

over the Soviet Union's Rimas Kurtinaitis in a 104-93 Tar Heel loss
14 shots and nine penalty corners in
the first period compared to UNC's
three shots and one penalty corner.
Many of those penalty corner shots
were taken by the imposing Hilbrand,
another Dutch frosh. The Hilbrand
rockets were stopped by either Spee
(15 saves) or Yurgin. The last line of
defense on penalty corners, Yurgin
sacrificed her body several times to
prevent ODU goals.
Hilbrand had been dominant in
past games against the Tar Heels, but
this time she was held in check by
junior Leslie Lyness. That is, until
Hilbrand, exercising questionable
field hockey etiquette, struck Lyness
with the ball. Lyness, who had been
hit several previous times, went down
and was later replaced by Nancy Lang
with 22:46 left in the second half.
Lang, a freshman from Killing
worth, Ct., played well in her backup
role. In fact, except for a Julie Blaisse
shot on a penalty corner, Lang
recorded the only Tar Heel shot in
the second half.
