A far larger Carolina basketball league tips-offthe spring intramural schedule early in January. The three-month intramural basketball season, complete with special games and tournaments, will begin right along with classes on January 17. Other intramural activities follow on the heels of basketball; indoor soccer and indoor track and filed also begin in January. Organizational meetings for all basketball captains will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 1 7 and 1 8. All teams expecting to play the 1989 regular season must have a representa tive at one of these two meetings. These sessions are used to review rules, register teams, answer questions and assign leagues. Intramural basketball is king at Carolina, the largest participant activity among over 50 different activities offered annually. Last year alone. 350 teams fought for a number of intramural basketball championships. The vast majority of teams, 270, were men's teams playing in recrea tional or competitive leagues. But others were women's (27) and co recreational intramural basket ball team at Carolina completes the season with at least one win. This year's Blue Heaven Classic begins play on February 23. The official end to Carolina's intramural basketball season comes almost three months after the season begins. The annual intramural all-star game - set for Tuesday, March 2 1 at 7:30 pm -features the year's best intramu ral basketball players, going head-to-head. Nominations for the 1989 All-Star Game will be taken during the first two weeks in February and voting will run for the next two weeks. Teams for the game will be announced just before Spring Break. The annual all-star game brings the Carolina basketball season to a dramatic finish,, but intramural activities certainly don't end with basketball. In fact, another major sport - softball - continues as basketball finishes. Basketball and softball are the two major spring sports, but they certainly are not the only ones. Twenty-eight different activities are set for the semester. The spring intramural calendar features events like these: semester-long tournaments in squash, handball and badminton, special events like Almost Anything Goes!, swimming and indoor track " .. Basketball season tips-off in January. meets, and one- to three-day tour naments for fencing, team golf and volleyball triples. The intramural slogan is "Some thing for Everyone." BASKETBALL tip-offs the spring intramu ral season. Mandatory organizational meetings are scheduled for January 17 and 18 at 6 pm Entries will be taken at these meetings and every team must have a representative attend one of the two ses sions. l-ON-l BASISXTBALLis the first of several special basketball events. The single elimination tournament has two divisions each - according to players heights - for men and women. Players compete in 20 point 10-minute games. Entries are due January 24. Play begins Friday, January 27. and runs through the weekend. INDOOR SOCCER, played in Fetzer Gym. also requires attendance at an organiza tional meeting, on Wednesday, January 25 at 6 pm. Entries will be taken at the meeting. , INDOOR TRACK & FIELD, an annual meet held in the Tin Can, will be February 1, Entries are due January 3 1 .
