N.C. State University Chancellor
Bruce Poulton has asked for an
internal investigation of recent alle
gations of corruption in the NCSU
men's basketball program, UNC
system President CD. Spangler said
at Friday's UNC Board of Governors'
meeting.
The state attorney general's, office
is assisting in the investigation,
Spangler said.
The investigation follows publicity
surrounding Peter Golenbock's book
"Personal Fouls," published by
Pocket Books, a division of Simon
& Schuster. The book is scheduled
for distribution on Jan. 23.

By JENNY CLONINGER
; Assistant University Editor
Brien Lewis, a junior political
science major from Toronto, Can
ada, has announced his candidacy
.for student body president.
: Lewis said his main goals as
president would be to improve
UNC's quality of life, education
and leadership.
Lewis said he supports consti
tutional funding for the Black
Cultural Center (BCC) because it
would be an important addition to
; the quality of life at UNC. This
'idea was sparked by a past request
'for constitutional funding of the
Black Student Movement, he said.
' "There are a lot more problems
funding a group than an institu
tion," he said. "This (funding)
' would show the administration
and the outside world that students
; support the BCC."
As another plank in his quality-'of-life
platform, Lewis said he
would try to eliminate the man
datory $100 meal card plan for
'students living on campus.
. "Just because you live in a dorm,
'you get hit with that," he said. "It's
like taxation without
representation."
ing, Kuncl said.
The decision follows more than
two years of student opposition.
Student leaders contend that the
proposition is unfair to rising juniors
and seniors.
"There is a consensus among the
housing staff that this is a good
decision and is the proper time to
make the decision," Kuncl said.
Kuncl cited several factors in the
decision, including the need to
provide a more stable environment
for freshmen and sophomores. Fresh
men and sophomores usually occupy
more than 70 percent of residence hall
space, he said.
The housing department sought
input from sources such as the
Residence Hall Association (RHA),
program.
The book charges that team
members' grades and class attendance
records were altered by NCSU offi
cials and professors; that no player
on the 1986-87 basketball team
received a degree; and that players
received drugs, cars, cash and gold
jewelry either from NCSU basketball
coach Jim Valvano or his staff; and
that staff members also gave them
chemicals to mask the presence of
drugs in urine samples.
There are also allegations that
Valvano distributed millions of
dollars raised by NCSU's sports
booster club, the Wolfpack Club, to
players and that a key player on the
1986-87 team deliberately lost, or
"threw" an NCAA tournament game
to avoid NCAA drug testing.
According to N.C. State officials,
eight of the 14 1986-87 players are
friends puzzled by
the home of Lee Sizemore, 46, of 102
Bristol Drive, Chapel Hill.
Sizemore told police that at about
4 a.m. he heard McMichael outside
calling for help with his car. When
he opened the door to see who was
outside, McMichael attacked him,
Sizemore said. Sizemore shot McMi
chael after a struggle.
According to a report published
Friday, McMichael's father said
police told him Sizemore left the

the Housing Advisory Board, and the
1987 and 1988 Quality of Life surveys.
According to the surveys, 85 percent
of the students supported the change,
Kuncl said.
Jimmy Randolph, RHA president,
argued that the change is unfair to
rising juniors and seniors who have
specific hall requests and wish to
remain on campus. The new lottery
system would decrease their chances,
he said, and because their housing
requests are room specific, they
would choose to move off campus,
which would greatly affect residence
hall tradition.
The RHA had submitted a pro
posal to the housing department that
included sophomores in the lottery
process and would guarantee South

still studying at NCSU or other
schools. One team member, Vinny
Del Negro, did graduate from NCSU.
Charges of grade changing have
also come from Richard Lauffer,
former head of the NCSU physical
education department. Lauffer said
on Jan. 9 that three NCs, or no-credit
grades equal to F's, received by Chris
Washburn in 1985 were changed
within several weeks to D's.
Lauffer said h.e brought the matter ..
to Poultbn's attention and said
Poulton knew of the grade changing
but did not appear concerned.
Last Thursday, Lauffer said phys
ical education instructors had been
pressured by assistant coaches to
change players' grades.
Spangler said at the BOG meeting
that "no supporting evidence has been
found yet to sustain any such charge
(made by Lauffer)."
house after McMichael entered, went
to his car, got a gun and then returned
to the house to shoot McMichael.
Police spokesmen have said the
men did not know each other, and
police know of no motive for McMi
chael's actions. An autopsy revealed
no alcohol in McMichael's system,
despite the testimony of friends who
said he had planned to go to a Chapel
Hill bar that evening.

Randolph also recommended edu
cating sophomores on the residential
opportunities off campus, but Kuncl
said the proposal did not go far
enough in representing sophomores'
interests.
Even if all freshmen decided to stay
in the residence halls, Kuncl said, all
juniors and seniors who desired
housing could be placed by the lottery
process. About 95 more spaces will
be available because housing officials
will reopen two residence halls,
Ruffin and Mangum, next year while
closing only Stacy Residence Hall for
renovation, he said.

officials say the only change made

Spangler said in a telephone inter

NCSU and that "may be reason for
him to say things that may have a
certain slant to them."
Spangler was not disturbed by

matter handled, as it should be, at
the campus level."
