The Daily Tar HeelTuesday, January 17, 198913 Sports Cavs from page 1 the mood of the Tar Heels' locker room in his praise of Morgan's performance. "Morgan had a fantas tic day," Smith said. "He showed what kind of a player he can be when those rainbows are going in. I don't think he had an open one all day. We had a hand in his face. All you can do in those situations is congrat ulate your opponent." But Morgan's scoring only high lighted a thoroughly impressive performance by the entire Virginia team. Maybe they were inspired by a suprise pre-game visit from their ailing coach. Virginia assistant coach Dave Odom commented on the unexpected locker room guest. "To see coach Holland come in just before we went to our team meal was a very heartfelt experience," Odom said. "In the seven years IVe been associated with him that's the first time IVe seen him crack just a little. I think he allowed himself one tear, that's all his personality will allow. "But he just told the team to go out and have fun." The Cavaliers, led by sophomore point guard John Crotty, had their fun by making a mockery of the Tar Heels' trapping press throughout the afternoon, leading to the open shots that Morgan and forwards Curtis Williams (12 points on 6-of-6 shoot ing) and Kenny Turner (12 points) were drilling from the baseline or taking to the hoop. Back-up point guard Anthony Oliver also gave Virginia some quality minutes against the Tar Heels' trapping defense, enabling the Wahoos to take a 50 41 lead into the halftime break. Smith had praise for the fine play of Crotty on a day when he couldn't say many good things about his own team. ""John Crotty did a good job withstanding our pressure," Smith said. "We played hard but Virginia responded to our pressure every time." In the second half, UNC guard Jeff Lebo responded to the pressure with some firepower of his own. The Tar Heels' main outside threat was on target from inside and outside for the Tar Heels. The 6-3 senior, who finished the day with 26 points on 1 1 -of-14 shooting, kept the Tar Heels in the game by taking the ball to the hoop and pulling up for 12- to 15 foot jumpers against defenders over playing the three point shot. Lebo joined teammate J.R. Reid as the only Tar Heel players to prevent the lead from reaching 30 points. Reid, who came off the bench ' for his 21 points, worked inside against the weak Cavalier frontcourt for easy baskets and frequent fouls. With less than eight minutes remaining in the game, Reid hit a Vs 'Li:..'.?B jy ys- 3 pi If It :V. 4 -? i 2 JsA. DTH Staff Photo Rick Fox goes up for a rebound in UNO's 106-83 loss to Virginia turnaround jumper to slice the Virginia lead to nine at 83-74. On the ensuing Cavalier possession, Lebo stole an errant pass and raced end to end for a layup to bring the Tar Heels to within 83-76, the closest they had been since late in the first half. But less than a minute later, Lebo was on the floor writhing in pain after turning his ankle in a tangle with the Cavaliers' Anthony Oliver. After the game, Lebo termed the sprain "prob ably the worst IVe had since IVe been at Carolina" and he left the arena on crutches. He will definitely miss Wednesday night's game at Duke. Left without the outside shooting of vLebo, the Tar Heels were helpless when faced with the double-digit deficit and less than six minutes to play. Kevin Madden, Steve Bucknall, Hubert Davis and Jeff Denny were all off the mark from three-point land in the final minutes. The Tar Heels finished the game with a 5-for-26 mark (19 percent) from beyond the three-point stripe. With Madden (3-for-13) and Rick Fox (l-for-7) having a rough day on the inside, the combination spelled an ACC loss for the Tar Heels. The only question remaining was whether or not the Cavaliers would break the 100-point mark. When Morgan hit both ends of a one-and-one with 52 seconds remaining in the game, they did. 'When they finished the afternoon with ' 106 points, it marked the third-highest point total ever scored against the UNC basket ball team. One more hoop would have made it the worst. Tar Heels roll over Maryland to pickup initial conference win By DOUG HOOGERVORST Staff Writer Xall it sloppy, uninspired, and boring but call it a win. In their A3CC opener, No. 6 North Carolina bdat Maryland, 88-72, last Wednes day night. ;;Kevin Madden's game-high 25 points and Steve Bucknall's 1 1 assists hejped the Tar Heels boost their record to 14-2 overall, and 1-0 in the ACC. ;The Terrapins lost for the fifth consecutive time, falling to 6-8, and I -2, despite a tremendous perfor mance from freshman Jerrod Mustaf, who poured in a team-high 18 points. ! Rick Fox added 18 points and J.R. Reid added 17 points and 10 rebounds in a winning cause. "I was really impressed at the way Maryland had prepared for our defense. I think Coach Wade did a marvelous job getting them to the right spots and I didn't think we played very well in the first half," Said UNC head coach Dean Smith. "In fact, I was extremely disappointed. We wouldn't win many ACC games the way we played in the first half." North Carolina opened the second half looking like a different team. The names were the same but there seemed to be a fire in the eyes of the players and the Tar Heels ran out to an 18-point lead before 90 seconds ticked off the clock. That lead stood up as the UNC fire went out quickly, possibly doused by an extremely subdued and silent crowd. The decisive Tar Heel run was a seven-point burst in a nine-second span. North Carolina used a scramble trap to force the inexperienced Terrapin backcourt into two consec utive turnovers. UNC returned the first turnover to Maryland but some good ball movement pushed the ball inside to Scott Williams who was THE Daily Crossword by Diane C. Baldwin 1989 Tribune Media Services, Inc. Maryland's coach Bob Wade dis agreed with the call and earned a technical foul in the ensuing argue ment. Williams hit both free throws and senior Jeff Lebo hit the technical freebees. Lebo finished the 7-0 Tar Heel run with a 3-pointer from the right corner. Only the play of freshman forward Jerrod Mustaf kept the Terrapins in the game. Mustaf finished with 18 points on 9-for-13 shooting. He was the man the Terrapins went to when they needed a big basket to keep them close. Despite the victory, Smith was less than happy with the Tar Heels' performance. "We're disappointed but we missed some easy shots and the rebounding wasn't quite what I wanted," said Smith. "We had a lot to be disappointed about and then I looked up and we were ahead." CAROL WOODS DINING ROOM WORK.
