8The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, January 26, 1989 t Sports Fencing sports, academics By JAY REED Assistant Sports Editor 'lt's not just physical, it's not just mental, it's both," said senior wom erfs fencing co-captain Alicia Foster. - Practicing three hours a day, three days a week and travelling to the likes of Boston, Baltimore and State College, Pa., by van, challenges the body's maximum allowances. But, through all of this the UNC men's and women's varsity fencing teams can claim over 70 percent of the team with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher. "You can't be a good fencer and be stupid," said men's and women's head coach Ron Miller. Stupid? No. Independent? Yes. ' Fencing, a varsity sport at UNC sirtce 1966, lost its one and only Crtant-ln-Aid (GI A) scholarship in 1980, when all the schools in the ACC were affected by major scholarship changes. Because of this, the thriving ACC fencing competition of the late 1960's and I970's was cut off in the prime of its lifeSchools, such as Clemson and Maryland who along with UNC were consistantly in the top 10 in the cquntry every year, were forced to cut their very successful programs. T'North Carolina, however, after winning eight of the 10 ACC titles between 1970 and 1980, never dropped its program. f "The athletic department has told us and has been very true to its word that our program is not in jeopardy. We're always going to have a varsity program if we stay within our budget," Miller said. ' Fencing is recognized by the University and the NCAA as a varsity sport, and its members get full use Fixed? Bud Bowl I mysteriously similar to Super Bowl in Miami ;In 1971, a reporter . asked Dallas Cowboys running back Duane Tho mas if Super Bowl IV was the biggest event ever. He replied, "Well, they're playing it next year, aren't they?" Judging from the hype surround ing Super Jiowl XXIII, maybe they aren't playing it next yean But' somehow, even if the Russians nuked us tomorrow, I think there would still be a Super Bowl XXIV next January. Or at least there would be Super Bowl commercials. The Super Bowl is easily the biggest sporting event of all. Bigger than the World Series, though I would debate no more important. Bigger than the NBA championship, Wrestlemania 111, any NCAA tournament, the Masters, the Bud Light Triathalon, the Fiesta Bowl, Starcade '88. Even bigger than the Coca-Cola 600, unless you happen to live in Charlotte. But unfortunately, most of the so called "Super" contests have been about as exciting as Cheez Whiz and have failed to live up to the hype bestowed upon them. jThis year, we finally got a game, ffy more 42-14 blowouts, no more Desktop Publishing, Inc The experts in laser printing & computer typesetting! They get prive leges including the Ehringhaus train ing table, the Kenan weight rooms and the Kenan study center. But, the unchanging budget is a sore spot among the team members and Coach Miller. Even though all entrance fees and most meal money during trips has to come out of the fencers' pockets, the economic crunch has not discouraged large turnouts for the squad. "There are more people trying out for our varsity team than any other school in the country," Milller said. "This year in the fall, we had 121 people try out." But, all grievances aside, the squads have dominated opponents on and off the fencing strip. The 1987-88 final poll indicated that UNC has not been totally crushed by the loss of their lone scholarship. The women ended the year ranked 10th while the men finished 13th in the country. The women already own an 8-0 record while the men are 6-4 . Last Saturday the men travelled to Duke and faced the Blue Devils, Air Force, William and Mary, and Navy with their sole loss coming to a very tough Navy squad, 14-10. In men's fencing there are three divisions: foil, epee and sabre. Three men compete in each weapon with all fencers facing three opponents. There is a total of nine bouts within each weapon and 27 bouts in a complete match. The winner becomes the first squad to attain more than half or 14 bout victories. Women's fencing is different in that John Bland Staff Writer one-sided matchups, no more Denver Broncos. Just good, hard football the way it was meant to be played. But let's face it, except for that last scoring drive and the endless replays of Tim Krumrie's broken leg flapping in the breeze like a dog's tail, does anyone really remember it? In the future, when I am asked what I remember about Super Bowl XXIII, I will not say "The Drive." I will not say "Montana to Rice." I will not say "the last seventeen beers." I will say "the commercials." Admit it, people, you liked Bud Bowl. Sure, it wasn't "Die Fleider maus," but it was neat and worth the buildup. When they brought in the quart bottle as "The Freezer", I damn near spit out my Goebel's I was laughing so hard (you can tell my level of humor). I knew Bud would win, too. But hey, wasn't Bud Bowl an RESUMES $10 per page quick service free parking no hassles can mix only the foil is used. Only four fencers battle in a match and the total number of bouts per match is 16. The women were also at Duke last weekend, squaring off against the Blue Devils, Air Force, Navy and N.C. State. The women's fencing squad swept the four-team tourna ment with victories of 1 1-5, 14-2, 1 1 5 and a 9-7 squeaker over Duke. Age will soon catch up with the fencing squads. The top four women and six of the top nine men are seniors this year. Women's co-captains Foster and Cheryl Gates have led the team now for four years and, along with Coach Miller, are busy recruiting potential fencers for future squads. Coach Miller explains that expe rience is sometimes not the best thing to look for in a possible fencer. . " "We had a man come here seven years ago who was New Jersey state champion in epee," explains Miller, "but he didn't make our team. He went through the tryouts and couldnT, cut it, so we cut him." This weekend the Tar Heel fencers will again be on the road, travelling to State College, Pa., to face Penn State, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Columbia, Cornell, N.C. State (men) and Fairleigh Dickinson (women). For the men, the battle with N.C. State will be a rematch of a back and forth melee from last season in which North Carolina won the first meeting, State won the second and then overcame UNC by two bouts, 49-47, to capture the ACC title Once again travelling over 400 miles by land, UNC's musketeers will show how the true student athlete can be on top of his books and his game. almost exact replica of Super Bowl XXIII? The veterans edge the young guns on a last-second drive. How did Anheuser-Busch know that was going to happen? Who got paid off, huh? And is Bud Bowl II going to be the same matchup, or will we see Budweiser-Busch or Michelob Light Michelob Dry? Even though I liked Bud Bowl, I thought the American Express ads with Saturday Night Live's Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz were clearly the best. Fast and funny and not too kind to rival Visa. (TV fans take note: Unless you taped those ads, you won't be seeing them again. They only cost a couple million bucks for a one-shot deal.) (Advertising majors also take note: $650,000 American for each 30 second ad. Now I know why those damn classes are always filled.) There were some disappointments. The Pepsi-Coke wars got very annoy ing after awhile, and the thought of Michael J. Fox cloning himself sent shivers down my spine. And maybe I had a pair of defective 3-D glasses, but I couldnt figure out what the big deal was about that Diet Coke commercial. The less said about the halftime show, the better. Halftime shows are supposed to be tacky and stupid, but that one went where tacky and stupid have never gone before. I thought Sha Na Na was going to rise from the bowels of hell and make a comeback. Fortunately, all we had to deal with was some fruity Elvis imitator who looked like he'd had a run-in with a truckload of Vitalis. Ditto the pre-game talent compe tition. Who the hell won, anyway? Who the hell cares? . So it was a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Just relaxing with a keg of Goebel's and musing about how they're going to top it next year. Parachuting elephants, maybe? Wake first half we had too many turnovers (10), but we came together in the second half and did what we had to do. Reid sparked a 19-4 UNC surge midway through the second half, which turned a close game into a relative laugher. After Robert Siler's driving layup cut the difference to 60 55 with 12:21 to go, Reid went to work, dropping in a layup off a nice King Rice lob and making one of two free throws a few moments later. Rick Fox followed Reid missed foul shot to put UNC in front by 10, 65-55. Following a T.V. timeout, Wake's Sam Ivy, who finished with a team high 24 points, canned a pair of free throws. But Bucknall swished a three point bomb from the right side, and Reid broke free for another layin to make it 70-57. Staak then called time with 10:02 to go, reinserting freshman point guard Derrick McQueen, who had gone to the bench seven minutes earlier with his fourth personal foul. In what Smith called "the key to the game," UNC dropped back into a 2 3 zone, further confusing Wake's already disjointed offense . While the Deacons were turning the ball over on consecutive posses sions, Scott Williams hit back-to-back buckets a follow shot of a Reid miss and a seven-foot jumper in the lane to push UNC's lead to 74-57 with eight minutes to go. Phil Medlin hit a rebound shot for Wake, but Bucknall capped the spurt in style with a flying tip-in of a Williams miss and yet another three point bomb.
