' Name the hottest team in the;
Atlantic Coast Conference, the most
mixed-up, topsy-turvy conference of
hoops in the nation?
Yes, Virginia, it's the Cavaliers .
at least up until Wednesday night,
u hen Duke brought them back down
to earth, 85-66.
Until that embarrassment, the
Cavs had been on a six-game winning
streak that began when No. 6 North
Carolina was fed to the University
Hall faithful, 106-83, Dean Smith's
worst loss since the late 1970s.
You remember the. game in our
not-so-distant past in which Cav
guard Richard Morgan hit eight treys
en route to 39 points. Reserves
Anthony Oliver, Kenny Turner and
Curtis Williams hit for 12 points each
as everyone took their shots at the
stunned Tar Heels.
Well, Sunday's rematch at the
Smith.. Center. (1 p.m., WRAL-TV ..
Channel 5) .shouldn't be that hpck-..
ing. -pnsider that five of the sl (Jav
wins carrie in the friendly confines of
University Hall, while the other came
at a neutral site (a 1 13-106 overtime
win over Virginia Tech).
But, you can't fault UVa head
coach Terry Holland for giving his
Cavaliers the best opportunities
possible to squeeze through a respec
table first half, having played only
two honest-to-good ness away games,
at Louisville and Clemson, and even
eking out some Top 20 votes to boot.
Both were losses.
The Wahoos' second half looks just
as bright with only ACC matches on
the road. But, those includ? games
at N.C. State, Georgia Tech and, of
course, the Dome.
With the ACC tightening up as it
has (with none other than the Cava
liers near the top), it seems that every
game should be a toss-up. However,
the second half of the conference
schedule will prove the preseason
predictions of the experts.
Duke will fight its way back on
top while State and UVa will show
the rest of the country that they really
don't belong grouped with the likes
of Georgetown, ; Michigan or veven

As for Sunday, the Sabbath Day

a much different ball game than
North Carolina now knows what
makes the Cavs tick in the outside
shooting Morgan, and as evidenced
by Wednesday night's UVa-Duke
matchup, if someone is constantly in
Sir Richard's face, he will miss.
In the paint, UNC is far superior
with Williams and Reid supported by
one of the (if not the) top sixth man
in the country in Pete Chilcutt. Their
job will be to deny the easy layups
that reserves Turner and Williams
were allowed in the first outing. Even
if Morgan gets hot, the Tar Heels
must prevent any others from giving
Another key to the Cavalier team
is the fact that they work in streaks.
After winning seven of its first eight
ball games, UVa fell victim on five
consecutive occasions. Now that the
six-game winning streak has come to
a close, Terry's boys are due for
Holland, who bears a close likeness
to Food Lion's Tom E. Smith, will
have to dig deep into his bag of tricks
to scare up a win at the Smith Center,
an ominous arena for most foes.
Virginia has never won at the
Dome and should not expect a
victory this time around.
