M HA is an important position,
and 1 am the best candidate
for the job.
I am running for RHA president
-because I like living in a dorm and
A enjoy being able to have an impact
on the place and the people that make
up my home. More simply, I want
to help people like where they live.
I have the experience necessary to do
the job, I have demonstrated the hard
work and dedication that are essential
.for such a role, and I have workable
and sensible solutions to the problems
that face dorm residents.
1 have been involved in dorm
government at every level. I served
as a floor president as a sophomore
and am now governor of Morrison
and a member of the RHA governing
board. This experience and the results
'produced in these positions have
shown that 1 am an effective, well
respected leader who has the qualities
and abilities that are essential for a
successful RHA president. If you
:have any doubts about my abilities
'or effectiveness, ask your area gov
ernor what they think of me. They
have seen me work.
The variety of RHA's functions
range from working for dorm resi
dents on projects such as maintaining
North Campus' Circus Room; to
' assuring that you have hot water for
' your shower each morning; to buying
.vacuum cleaners and pool tables; to
'attempting to prevent unwarranted
'room rent increases; to social and
cultural programming such as semi-
. hwm.
A
Foo- DTH editor
Sharon Kebschull
Because The Daily Tar Heel
is already a major college
newspaper, with the third
largest budget among college
papers nationwide, the next editor
of the DTH needs to continue to
move the paper forward. As Daily
Tar Heel editor, I want to continue
much of what current editor Jean
Lutes has done to expand the staff
and give readers solid news cov
erage of University, city, and state
and national issues.
1 believe that the paper will be
able to run at least two sections
within a few years. To move
toward that, I want to print more
"theme" pages, which have no ads
' and look like the front pages of
. sections. I will re-establish a
business news editor and print two
n pages of business news per. week,
a features page once or twice a
1 week and continue Monday's
double-editorial and Sports Mon
1 day pages. Without sacrificing
: student-written articles, I also
want to use more Associated Press
material, mainly through a daily
"sports briefs" box and business
news briefs.
I want to emphasize our cov
erage of the academic side of
UNC, which we can do by increas
ing our faculty contacts to cover
various departments in-depth. The
state and national desk will run
a weeKiy column concealing news
iderace
formals and talent nights. These are
concrete things that I will promote
to make our homes just a little nicer.
The two central features of my
platform are service and
representation.
Service: Dorm residents need
access to more computers. RHA must
push for a fully staffed South Cam
pus computer lab to be open when
students return in August with the
same capabilities as the labs on main
campus. Once the South Campus lab
is complete, I will work to get more
computers in North Campus dorms
since there are not enough there
currently.
South Campus Outreach is cur
rently ineffective as a division of
student government's executive
branch. I want to make South
Campus Outreach a new part of RH A
so that it will be able to serve its
intended function of trying to assure
that the special needs of South
Campus residents are met. I want
RHA to work with SAFE Escort to
provide increased safety and protec
tion for residents who return home
to their dorms from campus after
dark.
Representation: My solution to
assure representation for resident
students in terms of parking is for
the RHA president to appoint one
of the student members to the Traffic
and Parking Advisory Committee.
A newly established RHA appoin
tee to the Building and Grounds
Advisory Committee would be able
at universities around the country,
and the city desk will continue to
expand considering that we
have a bigger circulation than the
Chapel Hill Newspaper, we have
a responsibility to cover city issues.
Ill also combine our arts and
features desks to emphasize arts
coverage of Chapel Hill, Raleigh
and Durham.
Some of my other plans for the
paper will matter only indirectly
to readers but can improve our
reporting. It's hard to get faculty
the people who read the DTH
the least to trust individual
reporters, because we come and go
through UNC so quickly. That
means we have to get faculty to
trust the paper as a whole. Under
Jean Lutes, the DTH has begun
to make accuracy checks, in which
we ask sources to evaluate articles
to which they contributed. I want
to continue those and offer more
writers' workshops to educate the
staff and improve their writing. Ill
also make the managing editor a
second "editor in chief" who can
concentrate on expanding the staff
and keeping the office running
smoothly.

Ha
to watch for proposals such as the
Alumni Center, to ensure that deci
sions regarding our "neighborhood"
will be made with dorm residents
input. This position also allows us to
do such things as preserve the
tradition and heritage of Old East and
Old West following their upcoming
renovations.
RHA needs to work more closely
with the BSM in order to meet the
specific needs of all black students
who live in dorms. I plan to meet
routinely with the BSM president to
assure that this voice is heard in the
dorms.
RHA must work with the Depart
ment of Housing on policy and
budget decisions to let them know
student opinions and concerns and
to increase their accountability. A
very active and powerful student
voice is essential in providing resi
dents with a home that they can be
proud of.
I am committed to implementing
active solutions that can meet dorm
residents needs now. I am not a
political science major, and I don't
need this position to. get into law
school. I am doing this because I care
about dorms and 1 want to make
them better. As RHA president, I will
offer the best in leadership, expe
rience and dedication.

he tenure of Carol Geer has
certainly stimulated the Caro-
Jl. Una Athletic Association and
for the most part has been extremely
successful. If elected, 111 do my best
to continue this tradition. The CAA
has settled many problems, but there
are many more that need to be
addressed. These issues that I will give
top priority to are all devised and
designed to be helpful to students.
Fewer basketball distribution dates
-3 This past - year t. there, were .10.
distribution dates, in which students
usually received one or two tickets
each time. I will cut that down to
five or six distribution dates of at least
two tickets every time. This will save
many students hours of waiting in line
down at the Smith Center. Also, the
CAA will be consistent in the ticket
policy for the entire year. Students
won't be slapped with mid-year .
changes.

Ample experience, workable
goals and an understanding of
current student needs these
are my strengths as a candidate for
president of the Carolina Athletic
Association. My platform is straight
forward; its focus is building and
expanding on the recent success of
the CAA, while keeping an ear open
to changing student needs.
Experience is obviously a quality
the next CAA president must have.
Yet the most important issue is not
simply how long a candidate has
worked with the CAA, but what that
candidate has actually accomplished
for the organization. My experience
comes from serving as fund-raising
director of Carolina Fever this year
and working with the organization
last year. This year, I organized
raising over $8,000 for the CAA. I
have also worked extensively with
homecoming and Blue Blitz, so I have
a clear understanding of the extensive
planning which must go into these
events.
The CAA has been notably suc
cessful over the past few years, and

Athletic Association is not a
JLL simple task and cannot be
performed by just anyone. It requires
experience, dedication and innova

all aspects of the CAA. I have those
qualities.
Having been in the CAA since my
freshman year and serving on the
homecoming committee, as publicity
and fund-raising director of Carolina
Fever, and as CAA administrator
secretary and cabinet member, my
experience and dedication to the
organization far exceed any others.
Because I have been involved in every
aspect and committee of the CAA,
I feel that I can best represent the
student body.
Many people think that the CAA
is just tickets and homecoming, but
we are a lot more: intramurals, non
revenue sports, club sports and any
athletic concern you might have. I'd
like to let people know what we do
and when. The distribution of a
monthly sports calendar or better
coverage in the DTH would let people

TT believe that RHA has reached
a crossroads in its pursuit of good
representation for resident stu
dents. I have been at all levels of dorm
government, from floor senator to
area governor, and have perceived
what RHA should be from that
experience. I also have experience
with parking and how student
government operates to deal with
administrative actions that are unfair
to students. From this experience, I
have evaluated new plans of action.
My first, goal is a better system of
representation for residents by RHA,
through recognition of four main
areas of concern for resident students.
The first, parking, is slowly becoming
a much greater problem in the eyes
of the resident student. I find it unfair
that faculty and staff are allowed to
park outside their homes as well as
mine. I would like to have an
executive assistant for parking who
would serve as the RHA represen
tative on the Traffic and Parking
Advisory Committee, as well as the
RHA liaison for the student govern
ment parking and transportation
committee. My second area of con
cern is food services, with an exec
utive assistant for food services, who
would give RHA an active voice on
the Food Services Advisory
Committee.
Another area is campus improve
ments. I have seen the physical
improvements that have resulted
from the actions of South Campus
Outreach. But unfortunately, I think
game days No distribution days
will be held when UNC plays away
on Sunday. Also, on Super Bowl
Sunday there will be no distribution
of tickets.
CAA hotline Many students
never know when or where non
revenue sports teams play. To correct
this problem, I will set up a 933
number on campus. By calling this
number, students will receive all the
previous day's sports scores, and the
next two days' schedule for all. UNC
sports action. . . 5
Special projects I will add a
three-point shootout to next year's
dunk contest. In addition, I will try
to arrange for a "Carolina's Legends"
game during halftime of one of our
basketball games next season. I will
also push for obtaining at least two
gates of entry for students in the
Smith Center, instead of having to
go way back "into the jungle" to enter
Gate D.
I want to build on that success with
creative yet feasible goals of my own.
These goals focus on improvement in
three main areas: non-revenue sports,
ticket distribution and seating in the
Dean Dome.
Currently, attendance at most non
revenue sporting events is far too low.
I want to encourage more support for
these teams by asking the team
captains which games two or three
per season they would like for us
to target. We would then heavily
publicize these events and ensure that
a large number of Carolina Fever
members are there. I also want to
distribute schedules of all non
revenue home events in our dorms,
dining halls and libraries once a
semester that way students would
always have at their fingertips exactly
when and where these events are held.
Ticket distribution, especially that
for basketball games, will always be
a complicated, controversial issue at
this school. I believe our biggest
problem in this area is that in order
to try different methods of distribu
tion, we have had to make constant
know what is going on in athletics.
More people would support our non
revenue teams if they knew the times,
dates, places and opponents of the
games. We must get attendance and
spirit up to prove that we do support
our hard-working teams.
I would also like to increase
participation ' in homecoming. A
school this size with athletics this big
should have a huge, traditional
homecoming. I have already started
to carry out plans for next year's
homecoming and have visited several
schools, such as Villanova, Penn
State and the University of Hawaii,
to get ideas on how they do their
homecomings and how we can
improve on ours. I have also visited
the opposing school for our home
coming game and have"gotten them
to march in our parade and get
involved in some of the many activ
ities that will be going on that day
and week. The week will be chock
full of activities so there will be
something fun fyr everyone. I have
also talked with producers at MTV
about putting together a special for
this committee has promoted section
alism within the campus. I propose
the creation of a Campus Outreach
Committee, chaired by an RHA
executive assistant and boarded by
a representative from each area. It
would be supported by working
groups from across campus that
would look for physical improve
ments to improve resident life, such
as the resurfacing of Cobb tennis and
basketball courts, improved lighting
around the forest side of Fetzer Gym
and the possible location of a bank
machine on South Campus.
Finally, I would like to see the
creation of an RHA Security and
Safety Committee. One should not
have be unsafe walking to and from
one's home. The committee, chaired
by an executive assistant for safety
and security and boarded in a plan
similar to the Campus Outreach
Committee, would investigate cam
pus police's efficiency; propose ways
that SAFE Escort could be more
effective; offer the resources of RHA
to the Student Patrol; and improve
publicity for security and safety
services.
I also would like to change RHA's
reactive government with the Depart
ment of University Housing. Dr.
Kuncl, director of University hous
ing, and I have discussed new ways
of communication, with more fre
quent meetings and more active
involvement in housing decisions.
I have also investigated the instal
lation of cable in dorm lounges. The
Association
-
Bleacher seats I will do every
thing in my power to try to get
students as many lower-level seats as
possible. Bleacher seats could gener
ate up to 600 more lower-level seats.
If the athletic department won't give
us more seats, or doesn't install
bleacher seats, I will push for some
type of student boycott of a TV game.
Work on weight room improve
ments, now Sure, the new wellness
center would be great, but unless
you're a. freshman it probably won't
do youWny good. Thus, 111 push for
more"' weight room and Nautilus
hours in Woollen Gym, and hopefully
obtain a few student hours in the
Kenan Fieldhouse. More aerobic
hours will be arranged.
Homecoming Continue to make
homecoming as successful as it has
been in the past. Work with the
Chapel Hill police to try to move the
homecoming . parade to Saturday
afternoon, and push for a night
changes in the way tickets are given
out. Students are simply tired of
adjusting to a different distribution
policy every year. For this reason, my
goal is to make small refinements in
our current policy and then stick with
it, rather than initiating another
drastic change back to random
distribution.
Finally, the issue which interests
most students: seating in the Dean
Dome. The bleachers which the
athletic department has offered to put
in our lower-level student seats would
definitely be a positive step toward
better student seating. As president,
I would avidly pursue this idea, keep
students informed of when the
bleachers should be completed and
continue to push for better seating
even after the bleachers are installed.
Those are my main goals. I also
plan to address the concerns of
minority students; I want to continue
working with the Black Greek Coun
cil on events like the step show, and
I want to continually consult with
BSM leaders to ensure that the
activities we sponsor are of interest
homecoming. Works are under way
for the station to be here next year
but, if not then, in 1990. It may sound
big, and it is, but I have taken the
initiative and think that this is
something that student's would enjoy
and that would bring lots of publicity
to the University.
Something else students would
enjoy are bleachers in the SAC. I have
talked with Rams Club and Smith
Center officials as well as students
about the project. If installed, they
would be more spirit-oriented, create
more seats and would officially mark
OUR student section. The ticket
distribution will also be slightly
altered to meet the needs of all
students. Totally first-come, first
serve and totally random policies only
help a few, but by combining the two
policies the CAA will have a success
ful distribution policy on its hands.
I have been working with the CAA
ticket committee for this year and
next year, and we agree that a policy
of this type would be most beneficial
to all. I believe that if someone camps
out for a week in the cold, he or she
emit
Physical Plant and University hous
ing assured me that cable will be in
dorms by fall 1990. I am in favor of
this proposal, but 1 am concerned
about who will pay for the system.
Housing told me it will cost $27 1 ,00b
to bring the system to campus dorms,
and they propose to pay for the laying
of the cable with their surplus fund
of nearly $3 million, then making a
permanent room rent increase to
replenish the fund. 1 will not allow
this action. ' :
I also would like to see the insti
tutionalization of the Student Advi
sory Council as a chancellor's advi
sory committee. This council would
consist of student office-holders and
would help us return to strong and
well-coordinated student govern
ment. Perhaps the problems between
student government and the Univer
sity could be prevented if they would
recognize our right to self-governance
and representation on student issues.
My goals are not unrealistic. I have
laid out a structure for the expansion
of RHA. I have recognized how to
achieve these goals and have inves
tigated resident student issues. I
would like to see the University allow
us to be what we were elected to be,
the representatives of our particular
constituencies. I would like to see
RHA known for what it can do for
the resident student.

Night football games We have
six home football games next season.
Plus we spent a lot of money on the
new lights, so why not use them?
Night games would definitely gener
ate a lot of excitement.
New ideas Try to arrange for
one non-ACC basketball game to be
played in Carmichael, in a students
only situation. I think this would be
a "fun" game for every student and
help alleviate current strains with the
athletic department. ; , J ; i j ,
I want to make the CAA a place
where all students will feel free to
participate. If anyone has an idea, it
will be heard by me. I will make all
channels of communication open and
they will stay open. After all, the CAA
is your voice on all athletic issues.

to blacks as well as whites. I want
to expand on this year's immensely
successful homecoming in many ways
as well. I would like to involve more
student groups in the Franklin Street
party we held this year, asking them
to run their own game booths and
possibly donating all the proceeds
from the evening to a worthy charity
or group, such as the Campus Y.
I hope you will ask yourself these
questions about the CAA candidates
before you vote on February 21:
Which candidate has the knowledge
and composure to deal effectively
with the athletic department on my
behalf? Which one will actually be
able to keep the promises he or she
is making to me now? Which one has
a realistic grasp of what students want
and need today? And which candi
date, has the stamina for the hectic,
demanding schedule of the CAA
president? I am that candidate.

deserves the best seats; but I also feel
that someone who cannot camp out
because they have to work or play
a varsity sport and attend practice
isn't any less spirited than those who
do camp out.
The drive, initiative and ideas I
have are just a few of what a CAA
president should have. As a first
semester junior, I have had the
experience and will have another two
year future in the CAA. With that
experience behind me and the future
in front of me, it will be possible to
carry out any long-term plans and
create a more stable and consistent
relationship with the students. The
big ideas have been started and the
little ideas will get done. It takes a
well-rounded person to be able to
carry out the functions of a CAA
president. Based on my experience,
dedication and innovation, I believe
that I should be that person.
