8The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday, February 21, 1989 Sports Backcourt Frontcourt Depth Defense Coaching UNO Steve Bucknall is the glue of this team. He found a jumper that wasn't there last year. An excellent team player. Jeff Lebo must find his long-lost jumper. J.R. Reid is not scoring as much as everyone expected, but that's because of the UNC system, not J.R. Kevin Madden and S. Williams won't be denied inside. King Rice is a capable player at the point and plays good D Rick Fox is hard to stop within 18 feet. Pete (ihilcutt is in a slump. H. Davis hits the jumper. The Tar Heels' trap has been up and down this year. They may be just a step too slow. But their interior defense has been strong with Williams, Buck. How many coaches have won an NIT title, an NCAA title and an Olympic gold medal? 3 Bobby Knight of Indiana, Pete Newell of California and Smith. Edge Nevada (Reno) 6-foot senior guard Darryl Owens is the leader of this team. He can score, run the floor and find the open man. JC transfer David Howell handles the ball. 6-4 forward Matt Williams was Freshman of the Year in the Big Sky last year. Jon Baer, a 6-9 scorer and rebounder, and 6-8 Mike Dizaar man the paint. 6-7 senior forward Gabriel Parizzia is the Pack's garbage man. 6-6 forward Chris Rupp fits the same mold. Kevin Franklin will see time at guard. The Wolfpack enjoys an up tempo pace and the Heels will surely comply. But this team's definition of defense? Something you put up around de-yard. Len Stevens was 15-13, 8-8 in the Big Sky Conference, in his first year (1987-88) with the Wolfpack. His big mistake in '89 was scheduling a game at UNC. compiled by Dave Glenn bpooteb performances net ByckoaDfl ACC honors From Staff and Wire reports GREENSBORO North Carol ina forward Steve Bucknall, who scored a total of 50 points in three victories last week, has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the week.
