Oh joy! Oh rapture! Pedro AJmo
dovar is back in town! Following
his delicious "Law Of Desire" (shown
last semester at the Union) and the
outrageous "Matador" (which
enjoyed an all-too-short run on
Franklin Street earlier this year)
comes the most acclaimed film yet
from the young Spanish director.
"Woman On The verge Of A Ner
vous Breakdown" broke house
records in New York, and has been
nominated for Best Foreign Rim
by the Academy. It shows all the
signs of being an assured winner.
Leaving the Varsity Theater
tonight to make way for "Woman
On The verge" are Harvey Pier
stein's "Torch Song Trilogy," and
that other unmissible Oscar nomi
nee for Best Foreign Rim, "Salaam
Bombay," the Indian film directed
by Mira Nair which chronicles the
adventures of a peasant boy on
the streets of Bombay. Rush to it
today! Showtimes are 2:10 and
7:10 only.
This week, because we are so
thoughtful, the MOVIES are
arranged to spotlight the Oscar
nominations.
As always, asterisks denote
especially wonderful films.

Steamboat BUI, Jr.This terrific
silent comedy stars Buster Keaton
as a college graduate who returns
home to find his grumpy father's
Mississippi steamboat company in
trouble, and does his best to help

"The General" but there are some
great moments highlighted by an
amazing hurricane sequence at
the end.
MOVIES AT THE UNION
The coo Blows. Thursday, Feb.
23-7 and 9:30.
This incredibly touching film
about a young Parisian boy who
is rejected by his parents and turns
unsuccessfully to crime is consi
dered one of the greatest of the
French New Wave movement, and
with "Jules et Jim" is Frrncois
Truffaut's finest work. Surprise
winner of the Grand Pri?-? at
Cannes on its release in 195 and
also Winner of the Aca my
Award for Best Foreign film
The Unbearable Ughtnc sof
Being
Friday, Feb. 24 - 6-.30 and 9 i
This superb adaptation of Milan
Kundera's novel stars Daniel Day
Lewis ("Room with a View") as a
young Czechoslovakian surgeon
whose life is divided between the
loves of two different women.
Despite the odd flaw, director
Philip Kaufman ("The Right Stuff")
has done a remarkable job in
sustaining the. complexity and
eroticism of the characters and
their stories. Kaufman and Jean
Claude Carriere won an Oscar
nomination for their excellent
screenplay, as did Bergman cine
matographer Sven Nykvist for his
evocative photography. -
Godzilla vs. Megalon. .
Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb.
25 - Midnight
The only thing that needs to be
said about this is that the Friday
show will start late because "The
Unbearable Lightness of Being" is
very long. Okay?
Breaker Morant. Saturday,
Feb. 25 - 7 and 9:30.
Before Bruce Beresford resorted
to directing Burt Reynolds in
"Physical Evidence" he made this
worthy and popular drama about
how the British were so nasty
during the Boer war that they
quite happily sacrificed the lives of
a few simple Australians to cover
up for their own blunders. Despite
the odd prejudice, the film works
very well dramatically and
includes good performances from
Edward "The Equalizer" wood
ward and Bryan Brown.
