6DTHSpring Sports '89Tuesday February 28, 1989- Ciraddock'is by dldoog dyimasty Mackey, Austin to pace powerf By MARK ANDERSON Staff Wrrtsr Although the results of the indoor track season aren't in, Dennis Crad dock can be sure that he has built North Carolina's women's program into a dynasty. And, as the weather takes the competition outside, the men aren't far behind. "The weather here is so good that we've already done a lot of outdoor training," said Craddock. WI think we're ready to go." The women's team will be looking to defend both its 1988 ACC outdoor championship and its 1989 ACC indoor championship. Graddock's job will be made easier by a cupboard ful of returning talent. "Well be a top 20 team," said Craddock. "Not too many can com pete with us." .V S ' rs .-.-j-:- i -f " "Wx i .A" ,W S 'i i i !; H ' '' " ."''.... ' :...:-. ..g&? .... , w. -...i ...... . Kendra Mackey, the 1988 ACC outdoor MVP, may be the most important. At the outdoor championships, she won the 100-meter dash and anchored the victorious mile relay team (which also comprised Kari Krehnbrink, Mia Pollard and Shelby Moorman). Mackey is coming off of an indoor victory in the ACC 200-meter dash. Pollard will also defend her title in the 800-meter run, as well as Moorman in the 400. Tracy Cooke won the ACC championship in the 100-meter hurdles. Kim Austin will also be a key after a tremendous indoor season. She took the ACC championship in the triple jump and the 55-meter hurdles, earning the ACC indoor MVP in the process. These quality athletes will lead the team, but Craddock realizes that he will need all of UNC's depth to be a great team. Indoors, he was impressed with the improvement and hard work of Chapel Hill native Cammie Putman in the 200 and 400 and distance runner Jeanne Peterson. Craddock was also pleasantly surprised by the contributions of two freshmen, Rebecca Russell and Penny Blackwell. He felt they adjusted quickly to the level of college competition. Russell was a member of the ACC indoor champion mile relay team. "We thought they'd be good," said Craddock, "but freshmen aren't usually that good." The men suffered a heartbreaking loss in last year's ACC outdoor championship, and the rebound won't be easy. They lost all four of their individual champions, including two All-Americas. In addition, they will lose two important members of the team that finished third in the ACC indoors. Tim Goad was "the Tar Heels' best indoor thrower and Kyle Lowe was a vital middle distance runner "Kyle was very important to us," Craddock said. "We will miss him." The men's highly-touted recruiting class was a disappointment to Crad dock throughout the indoor season.- See TRACK page 7 ui women s Men's Track Roster squad Alan Baldwin 5-10 145 Winterport, Me.
