DTHSpring Sports'89TuesdayY Febnjary 2i96&i 30 Baseball from psgs 12 In left will be junior Todd Nichols, who sat out last season, while Roberts will likely platoon Villani and switch hitting Brad Woodall in right. Woo dall, a sophomore, hit .306 with 23 ribbies as a freshman. UNC's catcher for the third straight season is Jesse Levis. The 5-9 Phi ladelphia native started 60 of 61 games last year and showed no sign of wear and tear, hitting .317 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI. In Satur day's loss to The Citadel, Levis cranked his first homer of this season, a two-run shot. He is a rock behind the plate. But as is the case with Lasorda's Dodgers, its the UNC pitching staff everyone loves to talk about. Led by a trio of juniors lefty Michael Hoog and right-handers John Thoden and Jim Dougherty the Tar Heel hurlers have the talent and the depth to carry a team to the ACC championship. "Our pitching is our number one strength," Roberts said. "We look to that to keep us strong every day." Thoden, who was MVP of the Cape Cod League last summer, has already won his first two starts this season, yielding just eight hits and one run in 13 innings. Last Saturday he tossed a four-hitter at The Citadel. Hoog, who outdueled Clenison's ace in the ACC Tournament : last May, is battling arm problems. He should have won the Rick Mahler Award for durability after a sopho more season in which he pitched a team-leading 109 innings, surrender ing 120 hits in the process. The burly Coloradan went 10-6, setting a team record for wins in the Softball process. After that performance, Hoog skipped summer ball and underwent arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder in the offseason, but he apparently still hasn't recovered. Saturday in Charleston, Hoog got bombed for six runs in two innings-plus. - Dougherty went 6-5 last year as the No. 3 man in the rotation. Behind him are Scott Lodgek (5-4, 5. 10 ERA) and sophomore Kreg Gresham (2-4, 7.76). In the bullpen, Roberts has lefty Rich Fernandez (1.80 ERA, seven saves) and converted submariner Chris Cornacchio, who looked great in last week's season opener, coming in with the bases loaded and setting down seven straight Coastal Carolina batters. from page 10 graduated co-captain Pam Long. Head Coach: Donna Papa Assistant Coach: Robin Payne at shortstop for her third straight year. Third base will be occupied by senior Tracey Beine. Beine, a co captain from Wilmington, started every game last season in the hot corner. Leading the outfielding corps is junior Tracey Narwid. Narwid, a Pompton Plains, N.J., native, returns to her spot in center after leading the Tar Heels in triples and slugging percentage. Flanking Narwid will be Theresa Buscemi and Jenny Reed. Papa thinks the on-the-field trait that will best characterize this year's Tar Heels is an improvement at the plate. "We're going to be a better hitting team," Papa said. "We have some good long-ball hitters with Lisa McGloin and Michelle Rupp. Our freshman rightfielder, Theresa Buscemi, can hit the long ball and do a lot of other fancy things at the plate. We have a few more options offensively this year." Buscemi, a speedster from Ron konkoma, N.Y., will give North Carolina an added dimension a lefty at the plate, the first southpaw Papa's had in the lineup.
