CHAPEL HILL PU2UC UZ3ARY
A Star is Bom. Tuesday, March
7 - 2:30 and Wednesday, March 8
-7 p.m. -
Not the horrendous Barbra
Streisand-Kris Kristofferson ver
sion or the Judy Garland-James
Mason version either, for that
matter. This is the original, classic
story of a famous Hollywood
actor whose popularity declines at
the same time as his wife's grows.
Frederic March and Janet Gaynor
play the tragic couple and both
put in great performances in this
beautiful early technicolor film
scripted by Dorothy Parker.
MOVIES AT THE UNION
From Here to Eternity
Thursday, March 2 7 and 9:30.
Adapted from James Jones'
novel about life at Pearl Harbor in
the month leading up to the
infamous attack, this classic Oscar
winning film stands out as one of
the best American films of the
fifties. Great performances by
Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr
(especially in the legendary beach
scene), as well as by Frank Sinatra
and Donna "Dallas" Reed, both of
whom won supporting role Oscars.
Superbly directed by Red Zinne
mann, fresh from "High Noon."
BambI Friday, March 3 7,
9:30 and midnight.
The cause of generations of
psychological trauma Based on a
book by Felix Salten, this cele
brated Disney classic tells the story
of a young fawn's early years
growing up in the terribly danger
ous forest. Needless to say, brilliant
animation throughout.
East of Eden Saturday,
March 4 - 7 and 9:30.
in this excellent adaptation of
the John Steinbeck novel, James
Dean, in his first starring role, plays
the darker of two brothers who
are caught in a fight for their
father's affection. Exquisitely -directed
by the great Elia Kazan,
who had already made "On The
Waterfront" and "A Streetcar
Named Desire."
The Marriage of Maria Braun
Sunday, March 5 - 7 and 9:30.
This Fassbinder masterpiece tells
the tale of the rise to power of
a penniless woman in Germany
who is waiting for the return of
her husband from world war ll.
This complex and riveting parable
of the decline of postwar German
society is as good as any film from
the New German cinema move
ment, thanks to an astonishing
performance in the lead by Hanna
Schygulla, and, of course, to the
sheer brilliance of Fassbinder's
vision and filmmaking mastery.

James Dean
