passed since Dean Smith last grabbed
the scissors and helped cut down the
nets, but he didn't look one bit rusty
..doing the delightful deed after last
Sunday's ACC Tournament final.

because we did a good job shutting
him down."
Despite his sub-par effort, Ferry
nevertheless almost 'saved the day for
the Blue Devils. His 70-foot heave at
the buzzer was on line but inches long,
hitting the back iron and bounding
away.
"Ferry was close on that three
pointer," Smith said. "An old man
would have had a heart attack. I don't
know if we could have recovered for
overtime."
Indeed, more and more it became
apparent Sunday's game would be a
war of attrition. Things started off
in that vein when Reid inadvertently
gave Ferry a six-inch scratch along
his left cheek. Before the issue was
settled, four players (three from
UNC) fouled out, King Rice and
Duke's Phil Henderson nearly started
a rumble at midcourt and a handful
of minor skirmishes broke out as well.
"This game came down to who had
the most heart in the last five
minutes," Bucknall said. "People said
we couldn't win in the clutch. Well,
that was a clutch situation, and we
did it."
After trailing from the opening tip
off, Duke finally caught the Tar Heels
at 52 when freshman Christian
Laettner, who had 15 points, hit two
free throws with 10:54 to play. Ties
at 55 and 57 ensued before John
Smith made two foul shots at the 5:44
mark to give the Blue Devils their
final lead of the day, 59-57
At that point, the momentum was
squarely in Duke's corner. A repeat
of last year's final, when the Durham
ites seemed to want the title more than
UNC, appeared in the offing.
However, Bucknall, who had been
scoreless with seven turnovers to that
point, would have none of it. "Eve

UNC student follows path to success

Dream a Little Dream," says the
star on the door of John Ward's
room in Teague Residence Hall,
and the story behind the star almost
reads like a dream.
A freshman broadcast journalism
major, Ward plays Derek in the
recently released movie,,wDream A
Little Dream." The movie, a sort of
love story fantasy, stars Corey
Haim, Corey Feldman and Mere
dith Salinger.
Ward landed the part after four
auditions despite limited acting
experience. He compared the situa
tion to how a high school basketball
player might feel if suddenly placed
in the NBA.
"They knew what they were
doing, and here I was, a rookie out
of nowhere," he said. "But they were
really happy to take me in and
didn't resent me for not having
experience."
Ward's first scene was one of the
most climactic in the movie, and he
said it was intimidating to start out
working with established actors like
Feldman and Haim.
After finding out in January 1987

and cried after that loss last year,"
he said. "That was one of the hardest
losses I've ever had. That's what I kept
thinking about today as it got near
the end."
On UNC's very next trip down
court, Bucknall drove the left side of
the lane, scored over 6-foot-11 Alaa
Abdelnaby and drew the foul. The
free throw put the Tar Heels back
in front 60-59 with 5:28 to go.
The teams traded points before
Bucknall came through again. "I
knew the guy who was on me couldn't
keep me from penetrating," he said
Sure enough, Bucknall beat
Henderson on the left-hand dribble,
drew the foul while sticking in a short
bank shot and added the free throw
to put UNC back up, 69-66, with 1:46
left.
The Blue Devils pulled within 71
69, but Rice, the goat in the regular
season finale, hit four free throws in
the final 29 seconds, and Bucknall
made two more to give UNC a 77
71 bulge with 10 ticks left. A Laettner
three-pointer with three seconds
remaining gave Duke one last gasp,
and Rice cooperated by missing a
front-end opportunity. But Ferry's
heave didn't fall and UNC finally had
its elusive ACC tournament title.
"We have been looking forward to
this moment for a long time," said
Lebo, a first-team all-tournament
selection. "It's exciting for us but also
for coach Smith, because he gets tired
of hearing he can't win a (big) game.
That's ridiculous."

that he had the part, Ward was
allowed to take a leave of absence
from New Hanover High School in
Wilmington to begin filming Feb. 1.
For the next two and a half
months, Ward worked 12-hour days
six days a week. The schedule was
simple to remember, he said: He
either worked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
or vice versa, depending on whether
day or night scenes were being
filmed.
Sunday was "turnaround day,"
when the actors adjusted to switch
ing from one schedule to the other.
Because the movie was filmed on
location rather than in a studio,
each actor was housed in a Winne
bago, complete with a TV, bed,
table, shower, refrigerator and ste
reo system. Ward said the living
arrangements Avere a definite plus.
"What I wanted, I had."
He quickly made friends with his
co-workers and still keeps in touch
with them. "It was similar to living
in a dorm," he said. "You know
these people because you live with
them."
Ward said he felt sorry for some
of the young actors, who have not
attended public school since their

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.
UNC's Doug Wyland lost a hard
fought battle in the championship
match at 118 pounds at the 1989
NCAA Division I wrestling tour
nament on Saturday
A junior transfer from the Uni
versity of Michigan, Wyland was
the ACC champion at 1 18 but was
defeated in a tight match, 10-8, by
unbeaten and defending NCAA
champ Jack Cuvo of East Strouds
burg State University.
To get to the final match, the
Pittsburgh, Pa. native, Wyland
defeated Lauren Baum of Liberty
on a technical fall, 18-3, and Adam
Derengowski of Rider with a pin
in 1:25 in the first two rounds.
In the quarterfinal round,
Wyland went into overtime with
Oklahoma's Chris Bolin and out
pointed him 5-1 in the extra period.

concept of what's going on.
"But they're all just like us once
you get to know them," he said.
Ward did not land a part in a
major motion picture by sitting
around and waiting for things to
happen. He said it all started when
the movie "Firestarter" began film
ing in Wilmington in 1982.
His little sister Jennifer was cast
as a photo double for actress Drew
Barrymore, then 8 years old.
Because there are strict rules about
how long someone younger than 16
can spend in front of a camera, dou
bles are often used when the actor
or actress does not have lines.
"After a week, they (Jennifer and
Drew) became the best of friends,"
Ward said. "Drew moved in the
next week, and then her mom
bought the house next door. I had a
new sister."
After filming was completed,
Drew and her mother returned to
California, but the two families
remained close. In the summer of
1984, Drew and her mother returned
for the filming of "Catseye."
Ward said Drew's mother took
him under her wing. "It was sort of

America status for the first time in

In the meantime, he had become
a movie reviewer for local television
station WJKA, a job he held for five
years. Ward estimated having seen
more than 2,000 movies, learning as
he watched.
Beginning in 1984, he spent sev
eral weeks each summer in Los
Angeles. "I went to premieres and
hung out with Drew and the Holly
wood crowd. I was a high school kid
like anyone else except that I went
to L.A. every summer," he said.
Director Marc Rocco contacted
Ward's agent in late 1987 about a
small part in "Dream A Little
Dream." Ward said, "They flew me
out for auditions, liked the way I
matched up and gave me a bigger
part."
Ward isn't quite used to the sud
den attention he has received lately.
He said a group of screaming ado
lescent girls ran up to him after
attending the movie's premiere in his
hometown.
"Then ... I went to see it in
Chapel Hill and the same thing hap
' pened, but this time they were big
girls, which made it even worse."

hired East Carolina assistant Don
nie Thompson to coach the outside
linebackers. Thompson replaced
the resigned Les Herrin, who will
now assist Dany Ford at
Clemson.
Brown knows that improvement
on last season's 1-10 mark must
start now and is positive about the
preseason workouts.
"Our kids have done a great job
in our off-season conditioning
program and they will continue to
work there," Brown said. "The
most important thing we have to
do is get our players to have a better
self-image of themselves. Our top
priority in our off-season program
was to get stronger and faster. Our
top priority coming out of the
spring is to be a more confident
football team."
