D1 Winning Tar Heel pitcher Kreg Gresham fires one in during Tuesday's 6-4 win over Levis' three bits Dead UNC to 6-4 win over Teooessee By BETHANY LITTON Sail Writer There really is no place like home. Just ask the UNC baseball team, which returned to Boshamer Stadium after six spring break games in California to defeat the Tennessee Volunteers 6-4 Tuesday afternoon. It was good to play at home after being on the road for a long time, and it was good to get a win," said second baseman Dave Arendas, who had two hits and two RBIs in the match-up. Catcher Jesse Levis was the batting leader for the'Tar Heels with three hits and two RBIs, and Kreg Gre sham was the winning pitcher, despite getting injured early in the sixth inning. Gresham pulled a muscle in his throwing arm and will be out any where from 2 to 4 weeks, UNC Coach Mike Roberts said. UNC, who improved to 9-6 on the season, started attacking the Volun teers early. The Tar Heels led off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when centerfielder Tom Nevin made it to second base with a high pop fly which dropped into short center field. Nevin then crossed the plate for UNC's first run when Levis doubled off the right-center field wall. Two batters later, Arendas brought Levis home for run No. 2. After both teams went scoreless in the second, Gresham relieved starting pitcher John Thoden. Gresham started off slowly, giving up hits to the first two Volunteer batters. Tennessee catcher Shawn McDon nell sent a line drive to left field for a single, and his teammate Clint Factor followed with a double to deep center field, allowing McDonnell to score. Clark Rose, one of the Vols leading hitters, hit a center field drive allowing Factor to cross the plate with the tying run. But the Tar Heels quickly unevened the 2-2 score in the same inning and retained their lead for the rest of the game. Lead-off batter Levis singled to right field and moved to second when Vol pitcher Allen Halliday walked leftfielder Brad Woodall. North Carolina then pulled ahead, 3-2, on a Tennessee error. Arendas reached second and batted Levis in when third baseman Jason Imperial threw over first baseman Jason Maples' head. The final run of the inning came when UNC first baseman Steve . stroff brought Woodall home with a sac rifice groundout. . ,s The score remained 4-2 until Volunteer relief pitoher Chris Snyder walked Nevin in the sixth and UNC third baseman Darren Villani knocked a grounder between second and third for a single. The Tar Heel rally continued with two RBIs: a single from Levis and another from Woodall, who had come in from left field at the top of the inning to pitch for the injured Gresham. Snyder then struck out Arendas to stop the scoring, and the UNC run column remained at six for the rest of the game. Tennessee scored two more times to narrow the margin. In the seventh inning Maples singled and scored on a Mike Basse single. The Vols closed out their scoring in the top of the ninth with a powerful double from Imperial and an RBI single from Factor. The first out in the ninth inning came courtesy of a spectacular diving catch by left fielder Todd Nichols. Woodall sealed the victory for the Tar Heels by getting McDonnell to ground out to third and striking out shortstop Lar Gilligan for the final out. Roberts said the team played a good all-around game, with solid offense, defense and pitching all contributing to the win. "Today was the best that weVe played in the last couple of weeks," Roberts said. "I thought that it was a good team effort, which is what weVe been working for. Levis said he has been working hard on hitting and he feels very confident at the plate. Since many of the Tar Heels' early games were cancelled because of rain, Levis said, the Tar Heels will welcome a more regular schedule. "I'm looking forward to just getting into a groove and playing every day consistently, because we have a lot of talent," he said. THE RESCUERS Shows Daily G v 2;003:3r 5:307:00 j ?
