8The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday, March 28, 1989 Out-of-state sports fans take heart, you can stay informed I miss Akeem. And Sleepy. And Otis. And all of those boys in red down in the Lone Star State. For the first time in years, 1 must come to grips with the fact that I am utterly uninformed about the Rockets. For all I know they could be losing consistently to Miami or (horrors!) sporting new designer uniforms in shades of fuchsia and maize. It's a terrible thing to have your priorities this out-of-whack, but 1 must ease my conscience by explain ing that this ignorance isn really my fault. As you well know if you have out-of-state sports loyalties, keeping up with them from day to day is virtually impossible. Sure, I can catch the local news, but if 1 blink 1 usually miss the score that's flashed up on the screen. Highlights? The only way I would possibly see highlights from a Hous ton gameAis if something really spectacular happened, like Derrick Chievous sunk a skyhook from under the opposite basket with .0493 seconds left to defeat Cleveland 173 172. Newspapers aren't overly informa tive either, listing scores from two days ago because everything in the West happens too late for these East Coast rags to pick them up. USA Today is usually accurate and timely, but I'd have to get a part-time job to afford it. Fifty cents a day adds up, folks. In one year I'd be shelling out about $150 just to check scores and derive aesthetic pleasure from the Narwid keeps on hitting as softbal finishes 2-2 in Columbia tourney By ANDREW PODOLSKY Assistant Spoils Editor COLUMBIA, S.C. The UNC softball team won two and lost two last weekend to take third place in the five-team University of South Carolina Round Robin Tournament. On Saturday, the Tar Heels edged Toledo, 2-1, but later dropped games to the host Gamecocks, 1-0, and Georgia State, 14. UNC bounced back on Sunday to down Toledo, once again by the score of 2-1 in a tough nine-inning contest. They try to keep me informed, occasionally even sending sports sections from the Houston Post, but sometimes they forget to fill me in on major events, like (it still pains me to think about it) when Nolan Ryan left the Astros for the Texas Rangers. I can't help thinking that if I'd only known earlier 1 could have stopped him. 1 think a practical solution is for all the Houston coaches to set up a direct line with me, their loyal fan who's off slaving to get her education, by which they could call in all scores and developments and get. my opin ion on certain organizational deci sions. It's only fair. But because I have been deprived of watching games and reading about them for the last two years, I make up for lost time in a big way when I'm home in Houston. I don't think my family ate a single meal at the table all last summer, because there were Astros games on television every night. It was wond erful I knew exactly where the Stros were in the standings at all times and could spout out the scores and highlights of any game played in the past month. Friends from North Carolina would call and ask what I'd all four of its games. Georgia State took second with a 3-1 weekend, followed by UNC in third. The weekend action pushed the Tar Heels' record to 13-9 on the year. UNC's Tracey Brower flipped a one-hitter, and Tracey Narwid went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Tar Heels to a 2-1 win over Toledo for their first victory. Against Georgia State later that same day, Narwid had two more hits, and Vicki Parrott added three more, but UNC still fell short, 7-4. So 1 experienced extreme culture shock when I came back in the fall, missing weeks of games at a time. The same thing happens after an ons laught of Rockets basketball every Christmas break. This Christmas, however, I kept wondering if I was in the right place, because the Rockets went through a veritable trade-o-rama in the fall, and I only recognized about three of the players. I realize that it's almost too late to do anything about the uncertainty in the basketball arena, but a brand new baseball season is approaching fast, and I have an idea. What's the nearest major league baseball team? Atlanta, right? And what was the Braves' record last season? I rest my case. Now, the students at UNC have enough bas ketball teams to follow, but y'all are desperately in need of a real baseball team, a genuine example of America's game in action. So forget the Braves or pseudo baseball powers like the Mets or the Yankees. For an exciting, unpredic table spring and summer, all you need to do is adopt the Astros. That's right, once you watch 'em pitch, catch and hit, youH be a fan for life, and with this whole student body pulling for the Stros, mass media of all types will soon bend to the pressure and provide extensive coverage of every nuance of their season. champion USC was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. The Gamecocks scored the game's lone run when Michelle Delloso got on, on a fielder's choice, stole third, then scored on a throwing error. UNC's Brower, despite giving up only four hits, picked up the loss. Narwid continued her torrid hitting on the day, going 2-for-3 at the plate in a losing cause. Narwid, who is hitting .359 on the year, went 6-10 on Saturday to lead the Tar Heel hitters. UNC closed the tournament with a tight game against Winthrop on Sunday. It took the Tar Heels nine innings to wear down the Lady Eagles and finally end the marathon game. With the score locked at 1-1 in the ninth, UNC went to work. Lisa McGloin walked and took second on a Parrott hit. She advanced to third on a fielder's choice, then scored the winning run on a two-out Michelle Rupp single. Brower, pitching in her third game in 24 hours, got the win and improved her record to 9-4 on the year. Parrott had another good game at the plate, going 2-4.
