DURHAM. N.C. - The 10th
ranked UNC women's golf team
pulled a major upset over the wee
kend, winning the three-day Duke
Spring Invitational over the top two
teams in the nation.
The Tar Heels blew away the 19
team field with a 905 total, nine
strokes better than No. 1 -ranked
Tulsa's 914 score.
Close behind were fifth-ranked
Southern California at 917 in third
place, second-ranked Arizona (928)
and seventh-ranked Kentucky (933),
UNC senior Katie Peterson won
her fourth individual title of the year,
firing a four-under-par 218. USC's
Terry Thompson finished five strokes
back at 223. Other Tar Heels in the
top 10 were Donna Andrews in fourth
place (225) and Suzy McGuire in 10th
(226).
The win, UNC's third of the year,
virtually assures the Tar Heels a spot
in the "national tournament.

Ninth-ranked Maryland scored
three goals in the final period to upset
third-ranked UNC, 5-4, in ACC
lacrosse action Saturday in College
Park, Md.
Michael Thomas tallied two goals
and one assist in the loss, which
dropped the Tar Heels to 6-2 on the
year, 0-1 in the ACC. Maryland
improved to 5-1 and 2-0.
UNC jumped out to a quick 3-0
lead with two goals in the first period
and one in the second by Eric
Seremet, Chris Galgano and Thomas.
Maryland's Phil Willard closed the
gap to 3-1 with a goal before halftime.

extra innings, where they won in the

I8th-ranked UNC swim team scored
just four points to finish a disappoint
ing 39th in the three-day NCAA
Men's Swimming Championships.
The Tar Heels scored all their
points on Friday. Freshman Gary
Gauch, from Melrose, Mass., turned
in UNC's top performance with a
13th-place finish in the 100-yard
breastroke finals. Gauch's 55.94 time
earned him Honorable Mention All
America honors.
