Counselors can help campers learn the art of canoeing at Camp Hardee -UTHJ Summer Opportunities 89Tuesdayf April 4, 19897 Sommnieir camp Jobs plentiful foe people who caire aboo t kids By CRYSTAL BERNSTEIN Staff Writer Opportunities abound for those seeking employment in summer camps this year. Camps up and down the East Coast have positions open for counselors, specialists and kitchen aides. Previous counseling experience is not necessary for most jobs, but camping know-how is helpful, said Ilene Morales, registrar for Camp Leah in Bear Mountain, N.Y. Good leadership and planning skills and a positive attitude are also useful. "We look for folks that can con tribute to the program, but most of alL that care about the development and growth of children," said Ron Austin, camp executive at Camp Cheerio in High Point. Special positions for instruction in canoeing, rock climbing, arts and crafts, music, drama and others are also available but require certain qualifications. Those interested in teaching water sports and other outdoor activities usually need to have first aid, WSI (Water Safety Instructor) and CPR certification, said Judith Bev'an, director of Camp Broadstone, a camp for the academically gifted in Banner Elk. Counseling is a demanding job, because counselors must be available to campers at all times, said Portia Newman, assistant to the personnel, director of Camp Sea Gull (for boys) and Camp Seafarer (for girls), near New Bern. "Their days are not eight-hour days," Newman said. "One day is just, like any other at camp, because the kids are there day in, day out." Counselors usually have one day off per week at most camps, but the rest of their hours are spent with campers, said Joe McCranek, direc tor of camping for the YMCA of greater New York. "It's a pretty strong commitment. There are very few summer jobs where you're more committed time wise," he said. Salaries for counselors range from $80 to $150 per week, depending on age and experience, camp directors said. Overnight camp seasons usually run from four to eight weeks, with additional training time for staff. Jobs at day camps that run throughout the summer are also available. The University Career Planning and Placement Services office has information on getting applications for numerous camps in North Carol ina and other eastern states. Camp directors encourage students to apply promptly, because positions are filling quickly. See something newsworthy!
