Somebody up there didn't want the ' 'women's tennis team to play anything 11 'close to a full match Friday or "f Saturday. UNC has no "complete" tennis 10 facility. The UNC Tennis Center is c great until it gets dark and lights are '"''heeded. If weather is bad, the uni 'r versity doesn't have an indoor facility of its own. Add that to the fact that Duke also had matches on both of 'those days and cut UNC's time in half "f at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club. The result is everybody just trying to , decide a winner and get out quickly. " At any rate, coach Kitty Harrison felt Friday's 5-2 loss to Miami and Saturday's 5-0 defeat at the hands of Kentucky were fairly helpful. "This was some good competition," she said. "Miami is a lock to go to the NCAA tournament, and Ken tucky still has a good chance. All you can hope to do is play well, and we did." If 13th-ranked Kentucky was favored over UNC, Wildcat coach John Dinneen wanted to make sure it stayed that way. He arranged it so the Tar Heels' top seeds, Gina Goblirsch and Spencer Barnes, would play last. After leading his team through longer-than-usual warmups, Dinneen, a Harvard graduate, finally had his team ready 45 minutes after the scheduled match time. Unfortunately for UNC, that lost time could have been very useful. Goblirsch had just won the second set in a tiebreaker over Chris Karges to knot the match at one set apiece when they had to stop. The bitterest blow came when Barnes and Goblirsch didn't even get to take the court in number-one doubles against Karges and Antoinette Grech. Ann Stephenson, playing at number three after coming off an ankle injury, beat Miami's Kerri Reiter 6-3, 6-2, but lost to Caroline Knudten of the Wildcats 6-2, 6-2. She said playing the two matches in less than 24 hours was more than her now-weaker ankle could take. "I thought I was in control at the beginning, but I later got frustrated," she said. j Number six Gigi Neely took Lene Holm Larsen to three sets, but Larsen's serve and clutch play finally prevailed, and she won 6-1, 6-7 (4 7), 6-3. Barnes ran out of steam at the end in losing to Jane Yates 6-4, 3-6, 6 1 at number two. Grech defeated Farmer 6-1, 6-2 at number four, and number five Hahn beat McCarthy 6-1,6-1. The losses dropped UNC to 9-12 overall.
