The second race is The Sandy Lane Farm Plate. It is the only flat race of the day and has a purse of $2,500. It is about one mile in length. The Stoneybrook Steeplechase, with a length of about two miles, is the third race of the day. A $12,500 purse is offered. A $20,000 purse is offered for the fourth race. The Sandhills Cup. Also over jumps, it has a length of two and one-fourth miles. The Tanglewood Cup Is the final race of the day. Because of weight requirements, women are apt to be excellent steeplechase riders. The Stoneybrook steeplechase is the fourth stop on a 21 -race circuit that starts in Aiken, S.C and ends in Fair Hill, Md. Horses that win on this circuit can qualify to move up to a higher circuit with larger purses. However, the stoneybrook Steeplechase has no corporate sponsors. During its 42-year his tory, it has been a totally non profit event with proceeds going to the Saint Joseph of the Pines Hospital, located in Southern Pines, The entire workforce for this 'event is supplied by the Walsh family, volunteers and various local civic groups. Admission to the grounds is $7 a person or $45 to $500 for a parking space, with up to six people in a car.
