Blueg rass sets modern tonight The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday, April 25, 19895 By RANDY BASINGER Staff Water Critically acclaimed recording artists New Grass Revival will be performing at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro at 8:30 tonight. ' '. What is "new grass" music, you ask? 'Newgrass' is contemporary music played with bluegrass-style instruments," said Sam Bush, who is regarded as one of the world's foremost mandolin players and and is mandolinist fiddler for the group. With traditional bluegrass instru ments, the quartet consistently crosses almost every musical boun dary: rock or jazz, country or reggae, blues or gospel. Their debut album on the Capitol EMI America label, New Grass Revival, recorded in 1986, included :the instrumental "Seven by Seven," which earned a Grammy nomination. Hold To A Dream, the group's second album with Capitol EMI, earned praise from Phil Hood of Frets Magazine, who said, "If there is a tighter foursome than this in Nashville, I haven't heard them." The group is composed of Bush, guitarist Pat Flynn (also winner of the Frets Magazine award for the Guitar Jazz Pop Flatpicking div ision), banjo impresario Bela Fleck (also an inductee into the Frets Magazine "Gallery Of The Greats" following five consecutive wins in the banjo category) and bassist and lead vocalist John Cowan. The group has recently finished recording its third album for Capitol Records Nashville entitled Friday Night In America, slated for a May release. The foursome also appears on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's forthcoming album. The band was featured in last year's HBO special series "Tanner '88," written by Garry Trudeau of "Doonesbury" fame and produced by Robert Altman. of "MASH." They have appeared on "The Lone some Pine Specials," a television series featuring the best in new acoustic music; and "Peabody Alley Alive," an upcoming hour-long Nashville Network special recently taped at the famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tenn. New Grass Review released its first album in 1972, but the current band members have been together since 1981. In 1985, its first album with the current band members, On The Boulevard became its best seller to date and was voted Acoustic Album of the Year in the Frets Magazine poll. "I think that when people hear our music, they like it," said Bela Fleck. : "And if more people get a chance to hear our music, especially if they can see us perform, they're going to like it too." Tickets are $12.50 for the public and' $10 for Friends of the ArtsCen ter. They can be purchased at the ArtsCenter box office. Visa and MasterCard orders are accepted by calling 942-ARTS. While the Tar Heels didn't exactly adhere to that motto, they got a pair of runs when they needed them to defeat UNC Wilmington, 2-0, Monday at Finley Field. Michelle Rupp's single with one out in the bottom of the sixth pushed Theresa Buscemi across the plate with what proved to be the winning run on Senior Day. ... The home finale victory, which was secured by Regina Finn's shutout performance on the mound, upped UNC's record to 33-17. The Tar Heels will conclude their season with the other portion of the home-and-home series today when they travel to Wilmington to take on the Seahawks in a doubleheader. Although her team didn't play as well as it was capable of, Papa was pleased that her fourth-year players could go out in style. "I was just happy for the seniors, because it was a big win for them," Papa said. "Regina (Finn) pitched probably one of the best game she's pitched all year. We played very good defense and we waited to score our runs." The Tar Heels certainly played well in the field. The senior left-side duo of seniors Tracey Beine and Gina Elmore recorded 11 putouts, with many coming at crucial points in the contest. With one out in the top of the first and two Seahawks on base, Finn got UNC-W pitcher Rita Scott to pop up to the shortstop Elmore. UNC avoided any further trouble when Karen Rogers grounded to Wilming ton native and third-sacker Beine. The Tar Heels took advantage of their best scoring opportunity in the sixth. After Buscemi ripped a single to right and was bunted to second by Vicki Parrott, the dangerous Tracey Narwid stepped to the plate. The junior center fielder from Pomp ton Plains, N.J., hit what looked like a routine grounder to shortstop. After holding Buscemi at second, Debi Rowe fired high allowing Buscemi to race to third and Narwid to second. That allowed Rupp, a freshman from Herndon, Va., to slap her game winning single. The Seahawks' best chance to get on the board came in the fourth. After a fly out, Scott lined a single to center and was sacrificed to second by Rogers. Rowe then singled to left as Scott prepared to hold at third. After Tar Heel left fielder Jenny Reed bobbled the ball, Scott decided to go home. She obviously didn't know the strength and accuracy of Reed's arm, as the junior from Burnsville gunned her down at the plate. Accepted at the office SAVE OUR PLANET!
