The Tar HeelThursday, June 1 , 19891 1 Durham readies for spontaneous-emotion By SUSAN JENSEN Staff Writer If it seems as if nothing much happens during the summer in the Triangle area, you haven't heard about Night Scene on Ninth Street The street fair, sponsored by the Ninth Street Area Merchant's Association and the Durham Parks and Recrea tion Department, is an adventure that promises to make Friday, June 2, a night to remember. "It's going to be wild. It's going to be wild in the streets," said Bob Burtman, the Festival's coordinator. Music, theater, juggling, mime, danc ing, food, drink and more will fill Durham's Ninth Street Friday from 6-11 p.m. WRAL-TV adds to the festivities by sponsoring the best costume contest with a $500 prize. 'The event distinguishes itself by blurring differences between partici pants and audiences. It's going to be very colorful," Burtman said. More than 100 performance art ists, jugglers, clowns, mimes, odd balls and dancers will be there to entertain along with such musicians as Carter Minor & Rude Mirage, Michael Kelsh & Barney Pilgrim, The Void Brothers, Taz Halloween & Robert Griffin, Pinky Wyoming, Art Nouveau and The Gin Dickeys. Street performers will be launch ing into their acts spontaneously throughout the course of the event A more formal stage will be occupied by some of the area's finest blues, jazz, country, traditional and gospel performers. There will also be a special chil dren's zone complete with games, a hayride, moonwalk and The Last Great Snake Show, performed by UNC alumnus and novelist (The Acorn Plan) Tim McLaurin. mm Of course, food galore will be there to tempt taste buds while trin kets pull at purse strings. This is the third year for Night Scene. The fair started when the Ninth Street merchants decided to have an event to make people aware of the area and thank those who had pa tronized it all along, Burtman said. 'The first year it rained in the af ternoon, so we cancelled it and called a rain date," he said. "But it stopped featuring Mesquite Chicken Grill Old South Burger New Combination Sandwiches Nachos Supreme And We still haVe your old favorites! MONDAY SPECIAL 99z Highballs SUMMER SPECIAL $275 Light Pitchers everyday 310 W Franklin St 933-3767 Outdoor patio, Take -out, Parkins in Rear raining in time for the festival to start, and on the new date it poured." Burtman pointed out that the shops on Ninth Street don't fit into the norm. "It's unique in that it doesn't cater to one type of shopper like a mall does," he said. There are a wide variety of shops to tempt the consumer and some will have booths opens for the fair. The first two fairs were somewhat suc cessful but seemed to fall into the shadow of Chapel Hill's Apple Chill, Burtman said. He pointed out that this year's event will be more spon taneous with an opportunity for per former and spectator to intermingle. Burtman also said that this would provide an opportunity for students in the area to get a new feel for Dur ham. According to Burtman everyone at the fair will get a chance to join in and nothing will be predictable. "You'll never know as you go up and down the street what's going to happen next," he said. So if. you're bored with life at summer school, put on your best costume (no restriction) and join in the fun at Night Scene on Ninth Street, between Main Street and Markham Avenue in Durham, 6-11 p.m. Fri day, June 2, rain or shine, and see what the night will bring.
