4Rampage '89The Daily Tar HeelFriday, September 29, 1989 Qyeeim to be crowned! duBiGig halfttime By STACEY KAPLAN Staff Writer What would Homecoming be with out a Homecoming Queen crowning at halftime of the big football game? This year's selection process is now complete with a queen selected from the final field of eight candi dates from the senior class. Students cast their votes on Thursday, and the results will be known at halftime of the UNC-Navy football game. To vote, students presented their identification cards, which were marked to avoid repeat voters. Bronwen Griffith, vice president of the Carolina Athletic Association, chaired the Homecoming Queen se lection process. She said that 23 ap plications were received, and that the CAA narrowed the field down to 16. Four judges then conducted interviews to select the eight finalists. "The decisions were based on scholarship, service to the Univer sity, character and the essay on the application about change in the Uni versity," said Griffith. The posters for the candidates dis played around campus listed each candidate's name and her sponsoring organization, but did not include pic tures, a practice started last year. "It should be an honor for a woman who has acheived academically, and it should not be based on her looks," Griffith said. The finalist crowned queen will represent the University and crown next year's queen, she said.
