If you're one of those students lucky enough, to be treated to dinner this week end, why not go all out and enjoy yourself at one of the finer restau rants in the area? Aurora: Casual fine dining can be found at this Northern Italian res taurant, located in Carr Mill Mall in . Carrboro. Aurora's menu boasts a variety of pasta dishes prepared with rich, creamy sauces, as well as veal, lamb and chicken entrees. Daily seafood specials can range anywhere from tuna to swordfish, depending upon availa bility. , Scallops Provencale (sauteed scal lops in white wine, lemon and Par mesan) and roasted leg of lamb seem to be two of the favorites. All dishes are prepared fresh on the premises and are priced anywhere from $6.95 to $17.95. Aurora also offers a selection of Italian and California wines and is equipped with a full bar. Dinner is served from from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights. Lunch is also avail able Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations are strongly recommended on the weekends (942-2400). Cafe Giorgio's: You can choose from a variety of unusual pasta and gourmet dishes from several cuisines. Entrees run mostly between $8 and $15. It's an excellent choice for an evening of Italian fine dining, and they even let you scribble on the paper table cloths with crayons. The Cafe is located under Uni versity Square at 143 W. Franklin Street. Fresh lamb and Viener Schnitzel are two of Cracovia's spe cialities. The menu changes daily, with prices ranging from $ 1 1 to $ 1 5 for an entree. An early dinner special is offered Sunday through Thursday between 5:30 and 6-30. These din ners are priced at $9.95. . Cracovia is located at 300-B W. Rosemary St., and serves dinner at 5:30 p.m. on Friday nights and at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday nights. Reser vations are highly recommended (929-9162). Crooks Comer: A pig perched on the roof makes this restaurant at 610 W. Franklin St. hard to miss. The atmosphere inside is lively and the decor interesting. Depending on the weather, dinner can also be served outside. Previously featured in Food & Wine, Gourmet, Carolina Lifestyle and The New York Times, traditional South ern cuisine is the claim to fame for this restaurant. Cajun Ribeye, Shrimp and Grits and Hoppin' John (toma toes, scallions, cheddar cheese, black eyed peas and rice) are some of the favorites at Crooks. Homemade deserts and daily spe cials are also prepared on the prem ises. Entrees are priced at $10.95 through $16.95. Reservations are not accepted; seating is available on a first-come, first- served basis. A full bar, imported beers and an extensive selection of wines are available while you wait. Dinner is served daily from 6 to 10 p.m., and brunch is served on Sun days from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. La Residence: French country cuisine invites the diner to this res taurant. La Residence, located at 220 W. Rosemary St., offers elegant din ing inside and a more casual fare in its outdoor cafe. The menu changes daily but is always made up of traditional French dishes blended with other influences. There is plenty of fresh seafood, and Fillet du Bouef (made with brandied brown sauce and chopped shallots) seems to be one of the favorites. French and California wines are avail able to accompany any dish. Although reservations are unnec essary in the cafe, they are strongly recommended in the dining room. La Residence is closed on Mondays, open from 6 to 9 p.m. on weekdays, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and open until 10 p.m. in the cafe (967-2506). McCarthy's: Brass rails and wood set the relaxing atmosphere for this restaurant. Convenient to the Holi day Inn and the Hotel Europa, McCarthy's is located at East Fran klin Street and Elliott Road at Kro ger Plaza. The menu consists of a wide com bination of dishes, including grilled seafood, steaks and pastas. Nightly specials usually consist of fresh sea food. Scallops, grilled salmon and red snapper are just a few of the possi bilities. Prices run anywhere from $6 to $16. Reservations can be made on any day except football Saturdays. Din ner is served Sunday through Thurs day nights from 5 to 9:30 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday nights from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and brunch on Sunday from 1 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. Pyewacket: Casual fine dining can be found at this vegetarian restau rant that specializes in pastas and seafood. Pyewacket boasts a grilled catch of the day, and is also known for their delicious homemade des erts. Entrees run anywhere between $6.95 and $13.95. ., Live jazz or blues music is played in the lounge on Monday, Wednes day and Thursday nights. Dinner is served six days a week from 6 to 10 p.m. and from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday nights. Lunch is served ev ery day except Sunday. Reservations are recommended. Pywacket is located in The Court yard at 431 W. Franklin St. (929 0297). Slug's at the Pines: Conveniently located on N.C. 54 East next to the University Inn, this restaurant in vites casual but elegant dining. Best known for its prime rib, Slug's also has delicious seafood, steaks and chicken on their menu. Prices range from $12.95 to $18.95. A wide-screen T.V. in the lounge gives you the opportunity to catch your favorite sporting events while enjoying a mixed drink or one of the more than 50 wines on their wine list.
