Ram Triple, Willowdaile BLACK RAIN 12 Michael Douglas plays a scuzzball New York cop who's assigned to de liver a terrorist back to his homeland of Japan. For the most part, it's your basic cop-who-doesn't-play-by-the-rules story, but in the hands of Brit ish director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner), at least it looks terrific. Scott brilliantly captures the estrangement of a New York cop in Japan with his stunning location work, but ultimately can't bring off this predictable thriller. Also starring Andy Garcia and Kate Capshaw. Varsity Theatres, Willow daile SEAOFLOVE Director Harold Becker brilliantly captures the paradoxes of New York City: its vibrant culture and its mis erable loneliness. Al Pacino is the loner, a New York cop who's assigned to catch a kinky killer who murders people at the peak of their sexual excitement while playing an old 45 of "Sea of Love." Even though the film does not deliver all the thrills and excitement it promises, Pacino is excellent as the mournful cop. Also starring a gutsy Ellen Barkin and a vibrant John Goodman. Carolina Blue and White, South. Square sex, lies and videotape Steven Soderburgh won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival with this exploration of, well ... sex, lies and videotape. See it quick, because it's the one everyone is talking about. It's sensual, erotic, and funny, but don't believe people who tell you it's a comedy. This one will be around for a while a real coup for intelli gent, low-budget independent film making. With stunning acting from . James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher and Laura San Giacomo. Varsity Theatres PARENTHOOD Ron Howard's comedy-drama about the woes of family life is truly an ensemble affair, focusing on three very different families. It's hardly surprising that the movie eventually gives two thumbs up to procreation, but it's a close run thing, and pro vides much food for thought as it roller-coasters to its conclusion. Fea turing an excellent cast, including Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Mary Steenburgen, Tom Hulce, Dianne Wiest, and Jason Robards. Carolina Blue and White, Willowdaile UNCLE BUCK not yet reviewed John Candy plays an obnoxious babysitting uncle- John Hughes di rects the unfunny fat man once again. The only se quel of the summer that deserved to make more money than its predecessor. Willowdaile WHEN HARRY MET SALLY 12 Can men and women sleep to gether and still be friends the follow ing morning? That's what this de lightfully adult comedy is all about. Billy Crystal gives the performance we have come to expect from such a genius, and Meg Ryan is growing up nicely. With Carrie Fisher. Directed by Rob Reiner (This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride). Ram Triple, South Square DEAD POETS SOCIETY - This wonderful story of an unor thodox schoolteacher who inspires his young students with the passion and spirit of poetry is one of the year's finest films. It is joyful, tragic, and totally inspiring. Robin Williams gives his finest, most controlled perform ance to date. Directed by Peter Weir (Witness). Willowdaile TURNER & HOOCH 12 Even though another cop-and-his-dog movie seems dubious entertain ment, Tom Hanks comes out on top. In any case, its not his dog; the owner has been murdered and Hanks is as signed to look after it. Willowdaile HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS - i - - c - - ! I - u Q: N ?: h I i x f $P I r ,i fL.
