Weekend
from page 5
cessive opponent on the Tar Heels'
schedule so far has been just a little
stronger than the last. The Tar Heels
breezed past Richmond and Princeton
in their first two dual matches of the fall
season, but William and Mary should
prove to be a fairly big jump for UNC.
The Indians should repeat as the East
representative to the NCAA tourna
ment this year with a strong corps of
returning players. Head Coach Ray
Reppert also picked up Jane Wood, a
strong baseliner who is a junior transfer
from Oklahoma State. Wood should
contend for the No. 1 spot in the Indi
ans' lineup. Senior Danielle Durak,
ranked 42nd nationally, is Reppert's
top returner.
Last season, William and Mary
crushed UNC, 7-2, but Harrison is not
expecting a similar result this year with
the addition of two highly-rated fresh
men. Harrison said that freshman Cinda
Gurney, originally from California and
now from Candler, N.C., is perhaps the
highest-ranked junior at No. 10 in
the Girls 18's to ever sign with
UNC.
"(Gurney) has had tremendous tour
nament experience," Harrison said
"She's just a fine tennis player. That's
all there is to it." Gurney or senior Gina
Goblirsh will play at the top spot for the
Tar Heels on Saturday.
Freshman Alicia Portnoy, of Santa
Clarita, Calif., also comes in with a
very high junior ranking No. 34 in
the Girls 16's. "She is just a scrappy
player," Harrison said. "She moves well
and just hangs in points. She's not afraid
of three sets. She's just a great competi
tor."
Sophomores Dana Kanell and Gigi
Neely and senior Valerie Farmer will
round out the Tar Heels' singles lineup
on Saturday. Harrison has not yet de
cided on the doubles teams for
Saturday's match.
