i could have just as easily been 14-10,"
Iford admitted.
! B ut when Clemson's Levon Kirkland
intercepted a Burnett pass on the sec
ond play of the second half, the game
got out of hand. Clemson took over on
the UNC 1 8 and scored in four plays to
run the score up to 21-3.
! "I guess the big play of the game had
to be that interception early in the third
quarter," Ford said.
: That turnover took a lot out of the
Tar Heels. The fact that UNC's defense
had spent almost 9 minutes of the first
half on the field finally caught up with
the Tar Heels. The Clemson offensive
line started blowing the UNC defense
off the line. Three rushing touchdowns
by the Tigers in the second half (two by
Henderson and one by Reggie Law
rence) accounted for the final score.
; The Tar Heels almost lost something
more important than the game when
senior co-captain Torin Dorn fell to the
turf with four seconds left in the first
quarter. Dorn lay motionless for more
than five minutes after a 15-yard run by
Wesley McFadden. Tiger wide receiver
Chip Davis blocked Dorn as he twisted
towards McFadden.
Trainers worked on Dorn for more
than five minutes before he left the field
on a backboard with his helmet taped to
the board and was rushed by ambu
lance to N.C. Memorial Hospital.
News that Dorn felt numbness in his
hands and was undergoing x-ray ex
amination at the hospital changed the
intensity of the game. But Dorn re
turned to the field without pads in the
third quarter and apparently sustained
no serious injury.
"I was sort of woozy, and the only
thing I don't remember was the hit,"
said a disappointed Dorn after the game.
"I can play, and I'll be ready next week.
I knew I was OK when I was laying on
the ground. But they really scared me
when they put me on the stretcher. It
just feels like a crick in my neck now."
four yards before punching into the end
zone from three yards out.
Ford said that Henderson deserved
to be a full-time starter but added that
he liked using a combination of tail
backs. "We've been very blessed to
have two tailbacks," Ford said. "You
don't want Terry (Allen) sitting over
there and you don't want Joe (Hender
son) sitting over there too long. It's
really a very fine combination to have
the hard-nosed type runner which Terry
is and Joe, who is a very shifty runner."
Henderson agreed with Ford's as
sessment, saying, "I try to do the best
I can to not get tackled, and I do what
ever that takes. I think that takes a little
bit of dancing sometimes."
After waltzing through the UNC
defense for three quarters and scoring
his third touchdown, Henderson sat
down and turned over the reins to junior
Reggie Lawrence, who scored the
Tigers' final touchdown.
By contrast, the North Carolina rush
ing attack netted minus six yards. Even
after negating UNC quarterback Todd
Burnett's six sacks for minus 47 yards,
the Tar Heels still averaged just two
and a half yards per carry.
On the other hand, Clemson aver
aged just under five yards per carry,
which was plenty for the Tigers. 'That's
Clemson football," Henderson said.
"Just running the ball and that's all they
ask is four yards."
