See review on page 12. Varsity, Willowdaile SECOND SIGHT not yet reviewed A comedy starring John Larro quette (Night Court) and Bronson Pinochet (Perfect Strangers) as mem bers of the Second Sight Detective Agency hired by the police to find the kidnapped cardinal of Boston. Plaza GROSS ANATOMY The story of five medical students might be a competent exploration of the pressure of such programs, but Gross Anatomy fails to develop any of its characters sufficiently enough to really involve its audience. Mat thew Modine stars as the zany Joe Slovak. Daphne Zuniga is his love interest, Christine Lahti is their demanding Professor. Willowdaile IMMEDIATE FAMILY 12 Glenn Close and James Woods star as would-be parents who are unable to conceive and look to a young preg nant woman (Mary Stuart Master son). Kevin Dillon is the boyfriend. Directed by Jonathan Kaplan (The Accused). Plaza THE LITTLE THIEF 12 Based on one of Francis Truffaut's (The 400 Blows) last screenplays, this Claude Berri-produced film is about sex, adolescence, larceny ... all those wonderful Truffaut subjects. Directed by Claude Miller. See review on page 13. Varsity SHOCKER 12 The new, far-from-original horror film from Wes Craven is the fast paced story of Horace Pinker, a mass murderer who becomes more dangerous after he's been executed. The bizarre visuals save the film, but it's not Craven at his best. Starring Mitch Pileggi and Peter Berg. Caro lina Blue and White, Willowdaile THE BEAR not yet reviewed Hard to believe, but this Jean-Jac- . ques Annaud film has made over $ 100 million worldwide. Offering more than the sacharrine Disney True-Life Adventure series, this critically ac claimed film tells the story of a hunt, from the point of view of the hunted. Ram Triple, Willowdaile LOOK WHO'S TALKING The runaway hit of the season thus far, this is the story of a single parent (Kirstie Alley) and her search for the perfect husband (eventually John Travolta) for her son Mikey (the voice of Bruce Willis). It's an original ap proach to the by-now tired baby 7:15 9:30 Boys (R) 7:00 9:15 Olympia Dukakis and movie genre, and while it is pure TV sitcom, the laughs come thick and fast. Most refreshing of all, it doesn't take itself seriously. With Olympia Dukakis. Directed by Amy Heckerling. Ram Triple, South Square THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS 12 The stunning debut of writer-director Steve Kloves is the story of two piano-playing brothers (played by real-life siblings Jeff and Beau Bridges) who get the we'll-call-you treatment and so decide to hire a singer (Michelle Pfieffer) to spruce up their lounge bar act. Needless to say, she does more than that, forcing the brothers to examine their direc tionless lives. Watch for the scintil lating sequence when Pfeiffer slinks on top of the grand piano to sing "Makin' Whoopee." Carolina Blue and White AN INNOCENT MAN 12 Tom Selleck is an average, nice guy airplane mechanic who gets set up by two dirty cops and goes to . prison for it. He manages to get out and get revenge without blowing up the screen with the help of F. Mur ray Abraham and Laila Robins. Plaza sex, lies and videotape Steven Soderburgh won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival with this exploration of, well ... sex, lies and videotape. It's sensual, erotic, and funny, but don't believe people who tell you it's a comedy. This one will be around for a while a real coup for intelligent, low-budget independ ent film-making. With stunning act ing from James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher and Laura San Giacomo. Varsity SEA OF LOVE Director Harold Becker brilliantly Shirley MacLaine are fast friends in the captures the paradoxes of New York City: its vibrant culture and its mis erable loneliness. Al Pacino is the loner; a New York cop who's assigned to catch a kinky killer who murders people at the peak of their sexual excitement while playing an old 45 of "Sea of Love." Even though the film does not deliver all the thrills and excitement it promises, Pacino is excellent as the mournful cop. Also starring a gutsy Ellen Barkin and a vibrant John Goodman. South Square NEXT OF KIN not yet reviewed Patrick Swayze stars as an intro vert Appalachian seeking vengeance after his brother is killed. Set in (where else for a good blood feud?) Chicago. Directed by John Irvin. Wil lowdaile DO THE RIGHT THING Spike Lee's highly acclaimed film about racial tension in New York City returns. Yorktotvne At the Union BIRD Clint Eastwood's widely-acclaimed portrait of jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker is a dark, almost somber af fair. It tells the pained story of the suffering artist from an understand ing rather than idolatory perspective. The music is tribute enough. Forrest Whitaker is "the Bird," in a perform ance that should have won last year's Oscar for Best Actor. Friday at 7 and 9:30. Admission $1.50. ROUND MIDNIGHT A more loving homage to jazz is featured in this story of a musician and his greatest fan in 1950s Paris. Musical director Herbie Hancock won an Oscar, Dexter Gordon is the real- -v..- r At, v "X - ' ' gf all - star 'Steel Magnolias' life tenor-sax great who lights up the screen with his incredible, sponta neous performances. A film noted for its deliciously laidback ambience. Look out for a cameo by Martin Scorcese. Saturday at 7 and 9:30. THE BLUES BROTHERS Do you really need a recommen dation one way or the other? Score points for cameo-spotting. Look for Steven Spielberg, Ray Charles, Are tha Franklin, Frank Oz, Twiggy etc etc. Saturday at midnight. PELLE THE CONQUEROR This Danish film about a Swedish farmer who brings his young son to Denmark in the hopes of finding a better life is almost bitter in tone. For all its beauty, it's a depressing, hopeless film. Max von Sydow gives an extraordinary performance as the drunkard farmer who manages to hold onto his dignity despite his failings. Winner of Best Foreign Film at last year's Oscars. Sunday at 8:00. MISSING Costa-Gravas' story of the myste rious disappearance of an American journalist in a wartorn South Ameri can country and of the desperate search is an absorbing, if highly manipulative, political thriller. Jack Lemmon plays the father of the dis appeared never thinking that the U.S. representative might be lying. Sissy Spacek is the wife. Wednesday at 7 and 9:30.
