Hoi land's farewell tour could be bumpy ride

UVa. coach Terry Holland will be thinking of Davidson by 1 990
By ERIC WAGNON
The '80s in basketball have been
marked by farewell tours. Take those
of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Julius
Erving, for example. Virginia head
coach Terry Holland is not exactly a
basketball legend of the Abdul-Jabbar
or Erving stature, but Virginia
fans will bid Holland a fond farewell
during his 16th and final season at
Holland is just going home. After
the season, he will take on the job of
athletic director at his alma mater,
Davidson. Holland played for the
Wildcats and coached there for five
years before going to Virginia.
. "The initial shock (of Holland's
plans to leave) has worn off," senior
guard John Crotty said. "We've re
ally come together as a team, and
we're working on the things we can
If the preseason prognosticators
are correct, Holland's road out of
Charlottesville may be a rocky one,
as the Cavs are predicted to finish at
the bottom of the ACC heap. Fortu
nately for Virginia, those prognosti
cators can be wrong. Last year, the
Cavaliers were, supposed to battle
Wake Forest for the ACC cellar but
ended up battling N.C. State, Duke
and North Carolina for the confer
ence title. Virginia ended up with a
22-1 1 overall record and a 9-5 ACC
mark, which was good enough to tie
North Carolina and Duke for a second-place
After losing by 1 1 to Duke in the
ACC tournament semifinals, Virginia
played the Cinderella role in the
NCAA tournament, rolling up to just

One of the main reasons for Vir
ginia exceeding all expectations last
year was the emergence of ACC
Rookie of the Year Bryant Stith. The
6-foot-5 forward out of Freeman, Va.,
was simply a force on the offensive
. end of the floor. Stith, who is one of
the smaller frontcourt players in the
ACC, recorded 12 1 offensive re
bounds, an ACC record. He added to
that total with 95 defensive rebounds.
Among all ACC returnees with
more than 10 rebounds last season,
Stith was one of only two players to
have more offensive rebounds than
Offensive boards generally mean
high-percentage second shots, and
Stith, as one might expect, averaged
a very solid 55 percent from the floor
while scoring 15.5 points a game.
Stith also led the ACC in free
throw attempts, converting 77 per
cent of them.
While Stith returns, the Cavaliers
lose to graduation their other main
man in guard Richard Morgan, who
almost single-handedly dismantled
North Carolina last season in Char
lottesville. Morgan was the Cavs'
leading scorer with an average of 20.4
points per game.
Six-foot-six sophomore guard
Anthony Oliver is one possibility to
replace Morgan, but Oliver shot only
39 percent from the floor and was
one of six from three-point territory
in his freshman year.
Freshman Chris Havlicek, son of
basketball Hall of Famer John Havli
cek, should also get a look.
Another freshman guard, Terry
Kirby, who is 6-3, 212, chose Vir
ginia in part because he could also
play football. "
