10Basketball '89n"he Daily Tar HeelFriday, November 17, 1989 Duo of Doom' will help Tigers wreak havoc By DAVID J. KUPSTAS Staff Writer An identity crisis seems to be what is holding Clemson back from being projected as a legitimate Top 20 bas ketball team. Several ACC coaches, including UNC's Dean Smith and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, have said they fear Clemson this year. Yet the Tigers got lost in the shuffle in most ACC preseason polls, picked as low as fourth or fifth. A lot of media-types have not recognized that sports at Clemson does not end with football season. Blue Cups $1 that (the players) have "Clemson' across here," Smith said as he pointed to a UNC logo on a reporter's T shirt. "You put those same players in another uniform and they're going to be great. They don't get the respect they deserve." Clemson head basketball coach Cliff Ellis needs no reminders of what his team's only glaring weakness is. He knows that good outside play is a must in order to open things up in side for big men Elden Campbell and Dale Davis. "If our perimeter game comes along, which "it didn't last year, we can be awesome," said Ellis, a sixth year coach with a 93-60 record at Clemson. "If it doesn't we can be so so. If you look at our big wins, you will see that we got good outside shooting early." The frontcourt and experience will definitely be strengths for Clemson, and the Tigers' overall depth is the best Ellis has had in his tenure. Only two lettermen are lost from the team that went 19-11 last year. Forward Jerry Pryor was the only starter who graduated. But all the depth in the world won't help the Tigers if neither Tim Kin caid nor Marion Cash establishes himself as a top-notch point guard. Neither is a complete player, so for now certain situations will dictate who is at the point at what times. "I don't want to platoon them, but I may have to depending on who we " : .vJl i 1 'II X Yv vc & Marion Cash leads play," Ellis said. "Cash can push the ball up and down the floor, and Kin caid can shoot" The Twin Towers, Campbell and Davis, could be the most devastating center-power forward combination in the country. The second team All-ACC selection averaged 17.5 points and 7.7 rebounds in 1989. Campbell's partner in the "Duo of Doom." the 6-11 Davis, broke a 17- year ACC record for field goal per centage last year when he connected at a 67-percent rate. Already one of the strongest in side players in the South, Davis' stock increased further this summer when he toured Greece with the ACC All- Star team. There, Davis averaged 25.6 points per game and led the team in rebounding. The Tigers are high on Wayne Buckingham, a 6-9 freshman from Atlanta, who can play either power forward or center. The McDonald s Ail-American is an early candidate for ACC Rookie of the Year. Power forward Sean Tyson (6-7) is slated to return after sitting out last year because of gall bladder surgery. Ricky Jones (6-7) will start again at small forward. He started 16 games in 1989, averaging 11 minutes and 4.3 points per contest. Ellis is count ing on him to open up the inside with consistent outside shooting. Kirkland Howling (6-4) and Colby Brown (6-8) will share time with Jones at small forward. Six-foot-seven senior Derrick Forrest returns at shooting guard. He led the Tigers in minutes played and three-pointers while dividing time at guard and forward. He was named Clemson's top defensive player last year and led the team with 48 steals. "Derrick was our shutdown guy on defense last year," Ellis said. "He was our top outside shooter and he was a team leader in general. He was a guy I could count on day-in and day-out." David Young (6-4) and Donnell Bruce (6-5) will back up Forrest at second guard.
