Basketball '89The Daily Tar HeelFriday, November 17, 19891 1 Terps in turmoil: Maryland 5 in big trouble By BOB McCROSKEY Staff Writer What do you get when you com bine a new, enthusiastic head coach, an NCAA investigation, one of the better front lines in the ACC and a backcourt that is shaky at best? Obviously, you have the Mary land Terrapins and their problems in a nutshell. The biggest problem facing the Terps this year, besides conference opponents, is an NCAA investiga tion that could bring to light alleged violations by former head coach Bob Wade. In an effort to clean their own house, Maryland officials forced Wade to resign and brought in for mer Ohio State head coach Gary Wil liams. The move was also an attempt to appease the NCAA by acting "in good faith." "We regret that it (the situation with Wade) had to happen the way it did," sophomore forward Jerrod Mustaf said. "But we have to con centrate on this year and being suc cessful. "I don't think I'm the easiest coach to play for," Williams said. "I'm tough and I ask a lot of different things from my players." But the NCAA probe is still loom- ing on Maryland's horizon, and the initial findings don't look good for the Terps, who stumbled in with a 9 20 record a year ago (1-13 in the ACC). For now, Williams has told his players to put the investigation in the background and concentrate on play ing basketball. His biggest concern is getting to know his players and coming up with a competitive start ing five. Junior Teyon McCoy should start at point guard in a backcourt that lacks in depth. He started 34 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons before opting to red-shirt last year to improve his grades. "We have no real veterans," sen ior center Tony Massenburg said. "We need a point guard who can control the game, and we are confident in Teyon McCoy.." Sophomore Jesse Martin will probably join McCoy in the backcourt In limited action as a freshman, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard showed the ability to hit the open jumper and be a good backcourt rebounder. That takes us to the frontcourt, one of the better ones in the ACC. Led by Massenburg, Mustaf and so phomore forward Walt Williams, this No. 40 33 24 5 43 14 25 11 22 21 Name Maryland Roster Pos. Williams could develop into a force to be reckoned with this season. He proved his versatility by playing small forward and both guard spots at some point during 1988-89. The better the competition, the better Williams seems to play. Perhaps no Terp player has more riding on him than Mustaf. He chalked up one of the best freshman perform ances in ACC history last year, aver aging 14.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and finishing second only to Virginia's Bryant Stith for ACC Rookie of the Year honors.
