WASHINGTON The U.S. Postal
Service announced that it has become
an official sponsor of the 1992 Olym
pic Games.
Postmaster General Anthony Frank
cited three reasons for the action
improving the image of the agency,
generating increased revenues and
supporting the Olympics.

Being a worldwide sponsor of the
Olympics will cost between $10 mil
lion and $15 million, said Assistant
Postmaster General Peter K. Eichorn.
But it is expected to generate $300
million to $400 million in increased
revenues for the service through added
business in the small parcel and express
mail business and the sale of special
Olympic goods to collectors, he said.

Chapel Hill transit serves two park-and-ride
lots. One lot is PR lot on N.C.
Highway 86 near Horace Williams
Airport and the other is the lot near
Slugs at the Pines restaurant on N.C.
Highway 54.
If requests for funding from the
federal government are honored, Bonk
said additional park-and-ride lots would
be built. One of these lots will be on
N.C. 54 East near the UNC Continuing
Education Center, which is expected to

a dollar that doesn't have to be obtained
from higher postage rates, commented
Frank.
The sponsorship costs will be shared
by many other national postal services,
which will become subsponsors of the
worldwide Olympics and, like the U.S.
Postal Service, sponsors of their na
tional Olympic teams. Costs will be
divided according to the size of each
country and its mail volume.
Those sponsorships include the right
to use Olympic symbols on equipment
and products, including stamps issued
on connection with the event.
The 1 992 Winter Games will be held
in Albertville, France, and the Summer
Games will be in Barcelona, Spain.
Twenty-two other national postal
services have already signed on as
subsponsors of the 1992 Olympics,
Eichorn said.
They include Australia, Belgium,
Brazil, Cyprus, France, Hong Kong,
Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, South
Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria,
Portugal, Somalia and Switzerland.

between the state of North Carolina and

Bonk said 14 new buses were or
dered this year as part of a five-year
plan to gradually expand transit serv
ices. Five of the new buses will serve as
replacement buses to some of the older
buses, and the other nine will be added
to current routes.
In addition to widening U.S. 15-501
Bypass, South Columbia Street from
Mason Farm Road to the bypass is
scheduled to be widened beginning in
summer 1990. Bonk said he anticipated
the reconstruction of these two roads to
help make traffic near the bypass less
congested.
Transportation concerns will be in

terns by trying to determine the usage
of public transit, Bonk said. Usage, he
said, is determined by looking at times
of use and user destination.

Sun too dim for nightlight
LOS ANGELES The first light
house in the state to go solar is the first
in the United States to revert to a tradi
tional energy source.
"It didn't have quite enough oomph,"
said Lt. John Brooks of the Coast
Guard's Aids of Navigation Division
in Washington, explaining the decision
to go back to a diesel generator to
power the Los Angeles Light, which
for more than 75 years has guided ships
into the city's port.
Coast Guard officials in Long Beach
said they have been evaluating the solar-powered
light since its installation
in September 1987 and have found it to
be neither as bright nor as far-reaching
as the old one.
