The Daily Tar HeelTuesday, December 5, 19897 Sports Freshmmein shoot By JASON BATES Staff Writer By now everyone has heard the scores of the double massacre at the Smith Center over the weekend, so there is no need to repeat them. Programs such as Central Florida and Towson State play for the money, the exposure and the money. But why do the Tar Heels schedule these games? The money is probably not a signifi cant factor. In fact, they would proba bly make more money playing, maybe, a team like Georgetown on national television (Wow! What a novel idea!) than on a game like this. Exposure? Forget it. UNC needs more exposure like the campus needs another alumni center. So why are they played? Well, easy wins are definitely a plus. After dropping the last two games of their road trip, the Tar Heels needed a pair of sure victories to help boost their confidence before this week's games, which promise to be much harder than the Knights and the Tigers were. However, perhaps UNC head coach Dean Smith himself said it best. "We got to play everybody, and that's important." With five freshmen on his bench, the Central Florida's and Towson State's of the world give Smith a chance to get some playing time for everyone within the friendly confines of the Dean Dome. The stat sheet for the first four games told the story. . Of the five frosh playing this year, only forward George Lynch has made a significant impact in terms of points and rebounds. Lynch was averaging 10 points and 4.8 rebounds before this weekend, shooting 16-27 (59.3 per- Hoop sea Week two of the 1989-90 college basketball season has ended. That's neither good nor bad in itself, but it does mean that the much anticipated ACC-Big East showdown will begin. Hoop junkies get out the VCR, basket ball double headers will be shown on ESPN for the next four nights. However, before we look ahead, let's go . . . kcab ni emit. Even Dean Smith is subject to mis takes. The Tar Heel head coach made a , scheduling boo-boo, slating the Ala- bama game in Tuscaloosa only two days after the Maui Classic. That meant . UNC had, for all intents and purposes, been on the road for a full week and a half without back-to-back practices. . And so, against the CrimsonTide, North Carolina showed definite signs of fa tigue as it appeared flat and uninspired (especially on defense). Though Kansas stole the show in New York by winning the Dodge NIT, it could be St. John's who makes the . biggest splash on the college scene this season. The Redmen advanced to the . tournament finals without their best player, 6-11 Jayson Williams, a candi date for the NBA lottery next year. , Williams is out with a broken foot for possibly another four weeks, but junior Billy Singleton has filled in very well. With the incredible Boo Harvey, the Tech's Scott beats Pitt From Associated Press reports HARTFORD, Conn. Dennis Scott ' scored 42 points, including a fall-away " bank shot with one second left that gave ' No. 18 Georgia Tech a 93-92 victory over No. 22 Pittsburgh Monday night '. in the opening game of the Big East : ACC Challenge. .!;- Scott, who was 8-for-14 on 3-point-'." rs, got the ball near the lane with four ' seconds left and then drove toward the . basket, pulling up for the winning shot. Jason Matthews had given Pitt the T lead at 92-9 1 with two free throws with I nine seconds left. But Georgia Tech (3 1 0) advanced the ball to midcourt and T called a timeout to set up the winning 1 play for Scott. The junior swingman ; averaged 29.5 points in the Yellow ' Jackets first two games. The game was billed as a battle be ; tween the strong inside game of Pitts- burgh (2-2) and the perimeter scoring ; of Georgia Tech. The outside guys won ; as Scott, freshman Kenny Anderson - and Brian Oliver scored 83 of Georgia ' Tech's 93 points. This weekend's action was not played for the benefit of Lynch, though. He has more than proved himself to be a col lege player of considerable talent and one who will help the team in big games. These games were played to help the other freshmen who are still adjusting to big-time college basketball. With 10 minutes to go in Saturday's game, the "Blue" team hit the floor for the Tar Heels. This is the team that consists of the four remaining fresh men (Kenny Harris, Henrik Rodl, Matt Wenstrom, Scott Cherry) and senior John Greene. This team runs against the starters in practice and now it was their turn to play for real. Perhaps the one freshman who bene fited the most from the entire weekend Doug Hoogervorst Staff Writer Johnnies certainly have the guard play to go all the way. When Williams re turns, they just might. Pittsburgh was dealt a terrible blow when junior point guard Sean Miller announced that he would not play this season due to an ankle injury. Coach Paul Evans wasn't as sure as Miller about the injury and said he would ask for a second opinion. Miller still has a red-shirt year available and could in voke it to keep his two years of eligibil ity. The obscure continued to shine in the early going of the '89-'90 season, as another relative unknown earned the Dick Vitale Windex Player of the Week Award. Michigan State's Steve Smith took the honor as he helped the Spar tans to the Great Alaska Shootout title, averaging more than 23 points per game and six rebounds. ACC fans must have noticed the Duke schedule includes several patsies in the early going. Strange as this may seem, such a schedule (and not the Pitt's big men never could get un packed, and it was the Panthers' pe rimeter trio of Rod Brookin, Darelle Porter and Matthews that handled the bulk of the scoring. Because you have enough to worry about. for comfodeinice was 6-1 guard Harris. He saw limited action in three of the first four games. He had no shots, no rebounds, no steals, no blocks, no turn overs and no assists. On Saturday, Harris entered the game with 1 0 minutes left and stole the show. He was 4-7 from the field, including 3 5 from three-point land, for 1 1 points. He also grabbed two rebounds and added one assist. "I just wanted to come out and show . coach Smith I could hustle," he said. It wasn't all raves for Harris though, who even provided some self-criticism. "I have to work on playing good team defense and handling the ball well," he said. 'The fans liked a lot of those shots, but they were bad shots. "I was anxious and I didn't get the ball to my teammates like I should have done. Hopefully next time I'll do a better job distributing the ball to the other guys." On Sunday, he played only two minutes. Urged on by an entire crowd screaming "Shoot!" everytime he touched the ball, Harris nailed his only three-point attempt and again picked up two rebounds, but he had no assists. Forward Rodl is the only other fresh man to see significant playing time in the first four games, but he was not putting up the numbers like Lynch. Rodl averaged 1.3 points and 0.3 re bounds, shooting only 2-6 (33.3 per cent) from the field and 1-3 (33.3 per cent) from the charity stripe. Rodl has a tendency to become ten tative from the field if he misses his first shot. He has a great touch. He just needs to build up his confidence, and that's what these games are for. "The first four games I was in it was hard for me to take my first opportu provides sorooses killer non-conference schedule UNC or Louisville faces) is the best thing for the Blue Devils. Coach Mike Krzyzewski has had the luxury of ex perimenting with lineups, and Coach K has already found that freshmen Bobby Hurley and Billy McCaffrey will be immediate contributors. Duke will face some real competition this week against Syracuse and Michigan. La Salle proved it is a legitimate Top 20 team as it destroyed DePaul over the weekend. The Explorers have senior forward Lionel Simmons, who is one of the best players in college basket ball, but the key has been guard Doug Overton. The point guard easily handled the Blue Demon pressure and bombed from the outside for 20 points. It is strange how closely this team resembles the 1988 Kansas team a good point guard, role players and a great one-man scoring machine. Upsets of highly-ranked teams con tinue to be the trend in the early season as No. 2 Arizona was swept by the Oregons last week, losing Thursday to Oregon and then again Saturday to Oregon State. These early season up sets are the contribution of the presea son polls to college basketball. The media votes for the teams they believe will be the best at the end of the season, at buzzer Porter led Pittsburgh with 25. Mat thews had 19 and Brookin 18. GeorgiaTech's first lead of the game came at 83-8 1 on a drive by Anderson, who scored 20 points before fouling out with 2:50 to play. Enjoy the Season in Style. 215 N. Once the season progresses, I think I'll feel more comfortable." When he entered the game Saturday, Pete Chilcutt was on the foul line. Rodl lined up across the lane from Lynch. Lynch looked him in the eye and made a shooting motion with his hands, seem ingly telling Rodl to take the shot when he had the chance. Rodl took the shots, and he was 4-5 from the field, including 1-2 from the bonus sphere, for 1 1 points in 18 min utes. He also added one assist and one steal. Not a bad confidence builder. Rodl's defensive performance on Saturday earned him a start on Sunday. He played nine minutes, scoring two points, and collecting one rebound and two assists. - The other frontcourt man, center Wenstrom, has been suffering from an elbow infection, which hampered his early playing time. He only took two shots in the first four games and had no rebounds. These are not exactly num bers you look for in a post player. During Saturday's game, Wenstrom played 13 minutes, scoring two points, pulling down five rebounds, and add ing one assist and one block. Cherry, a 6-3 guard, saw no playing time during the first four games of the season. Saturday, he played eight min utes, scoring two points, grabbing one rebound, one steal and, yes, one block. The freshman need these games to help their confidence in the early part of the year because the next four games are against teams that all made the big show last year, and the ACC schedule is looming right around the corner. From here on, there are not many Central Florida's and Towson State's on the UNC schedule. rather than voting who is playing the best basketball presently. Therefore, teams that tend to make major im provements as the season progresses (such as LSU, North Carolina, Ari zona) get beat in what are termed up sets. Vitale pointed out that after win ningthe Dodge NIT, Kansas could fea sibly go 17-0, feeding on a large num ber of mismatches. But Kansas fans should not make reservations for the Final Four quite yet. Coach Roy Wil liams has the Jayhawks executing in midseason form and that form helped them beat the likes of UNLV and LSU. However, the UNLVs and the LSUs have superior talent, and as the season progresses, those teams will jell and close the gap. Nonetheless, Kansas' achievement of going from unranked to fourth in the AP poll has to be some kind of record. On the line, the Big East-ACC show down will go as follows: UConn at home over Maryland; Seton Hall left in Deacons' wake; 'Nova races by the Cavaliers; Tigers and Friars matchup is left to the b-ball gods; Johnnies trap the Wolfpack; Panthers remove the Yel low Jackets' sting; Orangemen juice the Blue Devils; Hoyas and Heels. . .wait until Thursday's preview.
