First lady says don't exclude
Salvation Army

bara Bush urged shopping malls not to
bar holiday Salvation Army solicitors
as she dropped $10 into the kettle and
headed off to do some Christmas shop
ping. Bush made the comments in a visit to
an upscale shopping mall where the
traditional Salvation Army bell ringer
greeted shoppers inside the entrance.
"I can't possibly think of Christmas
without the Salvation Army. I can't
think of disasters without the Salvation
Army," she said referring to the
organization's work for victims of natu
ral disasters. "I can't think of the needy
without the Salvation Army.
It just wouldn't be Christmas with
out that bell ringing."
The first lady's support came at a
time when the Salvation Army says a
comparatively high number of local
shopping malls are excluding the an
nual solicitation on the grounds that
they do not allow any other groups to
solicit.
"I am a great fan of the Salvation
Army, so I wanted to come out and tell
you what great work I think you do,"
Bush said after she dropped $10 into

Asked if she thinks every shopping
mall should allow the Salvation Army
to solicit, Bush said, "Yes." But she
refused to engage in negative com
ments about the ones that don't.
"I'm saying this mall is a great mall,"
she said of the Mazza Gallerie mall.
Waters told reporters that about one
third of the shopping malls in the
Washington metropolitan area now ban
the organization from collecting dona
tions. That is about double the number
of shopping centers that bar solicitation
in other parts of the country, he said.
The organization said that last year it
raised $600,000 in its kettles through
out the capital region, and about
$100,000 of that will be lost due to
malls that are barring the kettles this
year.
After stopping at the Salvation Army
spot, Bush went off to do some Christ
mas shopping in Neiman-Marcus de
partment store.
