The group's style is influ enced largely by its leader, Joseph Your Own Apartment. "I learned from my dreams," Sh abalala said. "Those who were singing for me appeared and they were chil dren. I can't say whether they were black or white. If the children were here on earth, you'd find me amongst them, singing." For many, Ladysmith Black Mam b?0 presents a dramatic introduction to indigenous African sentiment. On a continent plagued by apartheid and riddled with contradictions in social tradition and culture, the group offers topical messages, many with concrete value. After the group won the 1988 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album, Ladysmith Black Mambazo returned to South Africa and, amid political and racial unrest, gave a con cert in the Ladysmith Town Hall where blacks and whites sat together for the first time. Their social messages were evident on the Graccland album, where the group collaborated with Simon on the songs, "Homeless" and "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes." The first song draws attention to the universal con cern of the homeless, but cleverly makes no distinction between literally home less people and people seeking politi cal asylum. The latter concerns the extremes of wealth and poverty. Zulu for "Black Axe of Ladysmith," the 10-member group earned its name after cutting down all hometown com petitors in a series of singing contests. But they gained national recognition after participating in a Johannesburg, S.A. competition which led to their first: recording in 1970. They became the: biggest-selling recording act in south ern Africa in the 1970s. Today the group tours worldwide, bringing the rich musical heritage of their homeland to audiences every where. Tonight's performance is sold out, ' but for more information call the Carrboro ArtsCenter at 929-ARTS. The ' ArtsCenter is located at 300-G E. Main St. in Carrboro. Pursuing passion, partners in personals By BETH TATUM Staff Writer In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love and telephone calls? Lord Tennyson and his fellow ro mantics probably never realized that pursuing thoughts of love would even tually take the form of hotlines, dating services and personals. With Valentine's Day right around the corner and few visible signs of old fashioned romance, these services seem like the answer for some people. Some use them to meet people with similar interests. Some are tired of meeting the same kind of people after an evening on the town. Some just like to date. And then there are those who want to get in touch with that certain someone. "I had a friend who was working at a table in the Pit one day and she met a guy," said Wendy Beaver, a junior education major from Salisbury. "Later, she put an ad in the personals because she wanted to see him again." But although these services offer many exciting possibilities, most stu dents said they would not respond to a personal or call a hotline. "I'm too shy to do something like that," said Vesta Stahl, a freshman mathematics major from New Bern. Meredith Quimby, a freshman bio chemistry major from Clinton, Iowa, agreed. "You never know what the guy could be like. There is always the pos sibility of date rape and that's really scary for the girl." Regardless of these doubts, the search for that perfect someone goes on. Late night television offers a large variety of 900 numbers. Commercials range from the talking phone claiming to look like Tom Selleck to a tennis playing couple exclaiming, "We got the number!" There are party lines, date lines and talk lines. 1-900-246-RING tells women how to attract a man, what to do on a date, and explains why men do what they do. "Hotlines might be a good idea for some people if they don't have other people to talk to," said Scott Dixon, a sophomore pre-med major from Raleigh. "I feel really lucky I can talk to my friends and family." Some newspapers now use telephone match-making in their personal sec tions. The Independent recently added a romance hotline through which the person placing the personal can choose to leave a recorded message and the person responding can leave a message as well. Are there ever any happy endings? Paula Allison, a resident of Fuquay Varina, met her husband through an organization called New Friends. She said the program involved fill-., ing out a questionnaire that described what qualities she was looking for, such as height, weight, and favorite indoor and outdoor activities. Then the questions got harder. Alli son answered questions that gave a true representation of herself. "I almost quit then but I picked it back up again." Allison mailed herquestionnaire with a payment of $30, and in about three weeks she received the names of six men. These men also received her name, and three of the six decided to call. "When (the man that was to become my husband) called, I was sick, so we couldn't go out. But we talked on the phone a lot and by the time we actually met I knew I liked him." Six months later they were married. Allison said she would recommend this organization. "It's a nice way to meet people. I wasn't meeting anyone at work and my friends weren't intro ducing me to anyone." For some, personals, hotlines, and . dating services are a way to find a knight in shining armor. Others prefer to meet people in their own way. "I don't think it's for me," said Marcia ' Pridgen, a sophomore business major ' from Rocky Mount. "I don't think there is anything w rong with it if anyone else does it. Different things work for dif ferent people." IIJSTAIIT PASSP0HT PHOTOS Get two full-color passport photos while you wait!
