TOKYO Knocking out Mike
Tyson was improbable enough for
Buster Douglas. Now, he hopes boxing
doesn't decide Mike Tyson knocked
him out first.
. At least two organizations the
World Boxing Council and the World
Boxing Association withheld rec
ognition Sunday of Douglas' 10th
round knockout pending an investiga
tion into a "long count" protest lodged
by promoter Don King.
While the fight is being called one of
the biggest upsets in boxing history, the
"long count" controversy once again
has the boxinc w orld in a state of con
Track
World Series.
UNC's Michael Hoog was the loser,
giving up six earned runs on nine hits in
four innings. Brad Woodal I, Jim Dough
erty and Paul Shuey came in to pitch the
final five and held the Seminoles score
less. In the consolation game, with LSU
leading 1 -0 in the first, Maurer drove in
Chad Holbrook with a sacrifice fly.
UNC took a 3-1 lead w ith a run in the
third and the fifth.
The game remained close until the
ninfh inning. With LSU holding onto a
one-run lead, UNC committed three
errors, and the Tigers capitalized for
three runs to make the score 8-4.

Taggart said he felt the key issues in
this election, as in any election, were
experience and vision.
"I'm familiar with a lot of things that
go on on campus, and contacts with the
administration have been made. I think
it's real important for the paper to be

"I propose we notify students at least

so the students have time to schedule
these events into their schedules and

Frye, who is running for re-election,
said she has had experience working
with the Athletic Department and with
various student groups, and she would
be willing to adapt and change accord
ing to student wants.
She said her platform dealt mainly
with homecoming, ticket distribution
and Carolina Fever.

Meyran's error, Douglas was on the

Two rounds later, Douglas knocked out

Jose Sulaiman of Mexico, president
of the WBC, and WBA president
Gilberto Mendoza of Venezuela, both
announced they were suspending the
result.
"There is no champion before Feb.
20," Sulaiman said. The WBC execu

Mexico City to try to resolve the con-
in the last of the ninth, but one run was
all they could muster, and the Tigers
held out to win by three.
UNC's next game is Saturday, Feb.
17, at Coastal Carolina. The team's
first home match is Feb. 24, a double
header versus George Washington.

Douglas' disputed victory has cre
ated a wide-open heavyweight division
that for three years had been the per
sonal domain of Tyson, who was 37-0
with 33 knockouts. It's still unclear
what will happen next in the division,
although a rematch between Douglas
and Tyson appears likely, especially
since King promotes both Fighters.
Douglas did not go to the post-fight
news conference, but Tyson did. And
Tyson said he would welcome a re
match with Douglas.
"There's nothing wrong with losing,
I can handle a loss, but I want to lose
fairly," Tyson said.

She said she wanted to start a tradi
tion of polling students at one of the
later ticket distributions of the year to
get ideas about what problems there
may be. The CAA did that at this year's
N.C. State distribution.
Frye said it was also important to
educate students about the particulars
of the distribution policy.
She said the most important point of
her platform was Carolina Fever. She
said she wanted the group to become
more involved with non-revenue sports
through means such as pep rallies, bal

A change in the Tar Heels was ap
parent from the opening tip, when in
stead of using his regular starting five
Dean Smith went back to last year's
system of awarding starts based on
defensive performance in UNC's pre
vious game. By those standards, Hen
rik Rodl and Jeff Denny were given the
honors over Chilcutt and Rice while
Lynch subbed for Madden.
Once the tip was up, however, the
Tar Heels seemed to pick up right where
they left off in Wednesday's loss to
N.C. State. UNC missed its first six
shots while Wake built a 6-0 lead. But
Fox nailed a trey to snap the Tar Heels
out of their daze, and when Rice added
another three and Lynch hit a free
