"We're going to the show."
This phrase drifted across the UNC
sidelines as the final minutes drew to a
close. It began softly, then swelled to a
roar as the clock ticked down to 0:00.
Harvard, an aggressive team, took
its first shot on UNC goalie Andy Pi
azza at the 12:09 mark in the first pe
riod. The ball ricocheted off the top of
the high post, and that was the closest
the Crimson would come to the net for
almost three full quarters. Meanwhile,
the Carolina offense was busy turning
Harvard goalkeeper Chris Miller's day
into a nightmare. Miller had 60 shots
aimed at him during the game and 18
met with mesh.
Senior midfielder Steve Huff led the
way for the Tar Heels with a career
high four goals, followed by red-shirt
freshman attackman John Webster and
junior attacker Dennis Goldstein with
three apiece. Junior defenseman Gra
ham Hardin also scored the first goal of
his collegiate career in the first period
to give Carolina a 2-0 lead.
Webster's second goal, coming with
12:28 left in the second quarter, gave
him 44 points for the season, breaking
the UNC freshman single-season rec
ord of 43 set by Bert Fett in 1972.
The Tar Heels, knowing that if they
won they would likely face Syracuse in
the Final Four, refused to look past
Harvard, who had been ranked ahead
of Carolina all year and who had beaten
the Tar Heels in their two previous
meetings. By using a combination of
hustling, double-teaming, and sheer
physical contact, the Heels jumped out
to a 13-0' lead, and held the Crimson
scoreless for 44 minutes and55 sec
onds before Harvard recorded its first

The win gave the fourth-seeded Tar
Heels a 12-3 record for the year, while
the loss gave the Crimson an identical
mark. Carolina now moves on to face
first-seeded Syracuse in the Final Four.
This is the second straight year Caro
lina has travelled to the Final Four, and
the ninth time in the last 1 1 years. Last
year the Heels lost to Johns Hopkins
10-6 in the NCAA semifinals.
Earlier in the year Carolina lost to
Syracuse 14-9 in the Carrier Dome.
The Tar Heels, however, do not seem
particularly intimidated as they pre
pare for "the show," their term for the
Final Four.
"We're not just going to the show
this time," yelled senior midfielder
Craig Hasslinger after the game Sun
day. "We're going to be the show."

NSI NGTON TRT:
Conference champs
invite tough teams
By CAMERON TEW
Assistant Editor
The lOth-ranked UNC baseball
team came back to Chapel Hill fresh
off an Atlantic Coast Conference
Championship, so they decided to
invite a few teams to Chapel Hill to try
their luck against the Tar Heels.
UNC played host to some of the top
teams in the nation during the past
week in the second annual Carolina
Invitational Tournament (CIT). ACC
foes Clemson and N.C. State joined
the party against squads from sixth
ranked Southern Cal and perennial
baseball powers Arizona and Fresno
State.
The guests were not too kind to the
Tar Heels, keeping them from win
ning 50 games during the regular
season and helping the Tar Heels drop
two straight games en route to a 1-2
record.
The Tar Heels did not end the tour
nament with a winning record, but
their determined play throughout the
weekend had to help prepare them for
their trip to Waterbury, Conn., and the
NCAA tournament that begins today.

UNC 5, Fresno State 3
"King of the Mountain" is probably
how the UNC baseball team felt
coming back to Boshamer Stadium
with an ACC championship and boast
ing the nation's best home mark at 28
1. The Tar Heels proved they were
king early against the Fresno State
pitchers, and then relied on their own
pitchers to win the game.
The Heels pounded out 1 1 hits
against the Bulldogs, using three big
innings to win their 14th straight game
and improve to 49-1 0.
UNC left fielder Tcdd Nichols
started the Heels' hitting barrage with
a double in the first inning, scoring
later on shortstop Ron Mauer's single,
giving the Heels a 1-0 lead after the
first inning.

The Heels added two more runs in
the third on four hits, then watched
their lead dwindle in the fifth to 3-2
after Fresno State scratched two
singles, a walk and hit batter. UNC
made it 5-2 with two runs in the sixth
on three hits.
The Heels made the most of the
heart of their order, with the two
through six slots combining for 10 of
the 1 1 hits and all oftheRBIs. Nichols,
UNC's most valuable player during
the tournament, had two hits and
scored three runs, cleanup batter Steve
Estroff had a pair of hits and drove in
two runs,
UNC pitchers Jim Dougherty and
Paul Shuey combined for a seven
hitter against the Bulldogs, the second-place
finisher in the Big West.'
Dougherty, a senior right-hander,
worked six innings, improving to 1 1
2, before Shuey, a freshman, came in
to pitch the final three innings to earn
his eighth save.

The crowd for the Arizona game
probably thought they were in for
another Carolina scoring barrage af
ter third basemen Villani opened the
game with a single, stole second and
was promptly picked off. Wildcat
pitcher Lance Dickson then gave up a
single to Dave Arendas who also stole
second. Then Brad Woodall and
Estroff walked to load the bases for
Mauer. But Mauer grounded into a
double play ending the Heels' threat
and stranding two runners.
UNC stranded nine more runners
during the game, despite only seven
hits. Dickson, who improved to 7-8,
only allowed three hits after the sec
ond when Nichols singled, stole sec
ond and scored on a single by center
fielder Kurt Green to give UNC a 1
0 lead.
